Looks simple, but this is one of the biggest factors that determines the strength of your structure.

The correct concrete mix isn't just about throwing cement, sand, gravel, and water together. Every mix has a purpose, and using the wrong proportions can affect the strength, durability, and lifespan of your building.

That's why engineers don't rely on estimates or "nakasanayan na." We follow the required mix design based on the structural requirements of the project.

If you're planning to build, remember this:

Strong buildings don't happen by chance. They start with the right materials, the right mix, and the right engineering decisions.

At first glance, it looks like concrete. But look closer...

What you're seeing is called concrete honeycombing.

Honeycombing happens when concrete doesn't completely fill the formwork, leaving gaps or voids between the coarse aggregates. It's more than just an ugly finish. In structural members, severe honeycombing can affect durability and, depending on its extent and location, may reduce structural performance if not properly assessed and repaired.

Some of the common causes include:

• Poor concrete consolidation due to inadequate vibration
• Concrete that is too stiff or has poor workability
• Congested reinforcement that prevents concrete from flowing properly
• Improper placing techniques
• Leaking formwork that allows cement paste to escape

This is why quality control during concrete pouring is just as important as the design itself.

A well-designed structure can still develop problems if proper construction practices are not followed.

One important reminder: No engineer can determine the severity of a defect from a photo alone. A site inspection is always needed to evaluate whether it's only a surface defect or if it requires structural repair.

Building or renovating your property?

Don't wait until defects appear. Consult a licensed engineer from the planning stage to the final concrete pour. Quality is built into every step, not just the finished product.

One failed column can put an entire structure at risk.

This photo is a reminder that reinforced concrete columns don't just fail overnight. In many cases, failures happen because of one or a combination of several factors:

• Poor structural design or incorrect load calculations
• Insufficient or improperly detailed reinforcement
• Low-quality concrete or poor workmanship during construction
• Lack of confinement from closely spaced ties or stirrups
• Overloading the structure beyond what it was designed to carry
• Changes or renovations made without consulting a licensed engineer

From a single photo, it's impossible to determine the exact cause. A proper structural investigation is always needed before drawing conclusions.

What we can say with confidence is this:

Structural failures are often the result of problems that started long before the cracks became visible.

That's why engineering is not just about producing drawings. It's about designing a structure that can safely support the loads it will experience throughout its service life.

If you're planning to build a house, commercial building, or renovate an existing structure, don't leave structural decisions to guesswork. Investing in proper engineering from the start is always more affordable than dealing with repairs or failures later.

"The concrete looks okay."

That's not enough.

Before concrete is poured, one of the simplest but most important quality checks we perform is the slump test.

Why?

Because it tells us if the concrete has the right workability.

If the slump is too low, the concrete may be too stiff to properly fill the forms and surround the reinforcement. This can leave voids and weak spots.

If the slump is too high, it may indicate too much water was added. While it becomes easier to pour, adding excess water can reduce the concrete's strength and durability.

A slump test doesn't directly measure concrete strength, but it helps verify that the mix is consistent with the design before placement.

That's why engineers don't just look at the concrete and say, "Mukhang okay na."

We test it.

A few minutes spent performing a slump test can help prevent costly problems that might only show up years later.

People often ask if AI will replace engineers.

My answer is NO. It will replace engineers who refuse to adapt.

The engineers who combine experience, technical knowledge, and AI will always have the advantage.

At the end of the day, AI can generate answers. Engineers are still responsible for making the right decisions.

Ford hired, promoted, or brought back around 350 experienced technical specialists over the past three years after finding that AI and automated quality systems alone weren’t enough to solve vehicle-quality issues. These veteran engineers are now helping mentor younger teams, lead design reviews, and improve the data behind Ford’s quality tools.

This meme made me laugh.

Then I remembered... it's not completely wrong.

A lot of engineers started with salaries that barely matched the effort it took to become one.

But one thing I've learned is this:

Your first salary is just your starting point, not your ceiling.

Learn from every project.
Work with people who value quality.
Build your name.
One day, clients will pay for your expertise, not just your time.

That's a much better level to unlock.

Hard to earn 😂

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘁.

Here's something many homeowners don't ask before construction starts:

"𝗔𝗻𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘆 𝘀𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗵𝗮𝘆 𝗸𝗼, 𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝗸𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘆𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗶?"

The truth is, there isn't one footing that works for every house.

The right type depends on your soil, the size of your house, the weight it needs to carry, and even the shape of your lot.

Here's a simple way to understand the common types:

• 𝗜𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 – Best for individual columns and is commonly used for most residential houses built on stable soil.

• 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 – Used when two columns are close together or when a column is near the property line, so one footing supports both.

• 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 – Designed for load-bearing walls, where the weight is spread continuously along the length of the wall.

• 𝗠𝗮𝘁 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 – A large reinforced concrete slab that supports the entire building. It's often used when the soil has a lower bearing capacity or when the structure carries heavier loads.

The important thing is this:

The "𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁" footing isn't the biggest or the most expensive. It's the one that's properly designed for your specific project.

That's why footing design should never be based on guesswork or "𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘄𝗮 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻." It should be based on engineering calculations and the actual site conditions.

Planning to build?

If so, send us a message directly with your lot size and what you're planning to build, and we'll suggest the footing type that may be suitable for your situation.
