๐จ FM Thursday: How to Handle a Facility Emergency
Step-by-Step Response Framework๐
Two weeks ago we shared the Storm-Ready Checklist โ everything to lock down before an emergency hits. This week: what to actually DO once one does.
When something goes wrong โ a Fire, a Flood, a Power Failure, a Structural issue โ the first 10 minutes decide how the next 10 hours go.
Here's the framework:๐
1๏ธโฃ SAFETY FIRST. Evacuate if there's any doubt. Call emergency services before you call anyone else.
2๏ธโฃ ACTIVATE YOUR RESPONSE TEAM. Know who's in charge the moment it happens โ not who figures it out on the fly.
3๏ธโฃ ISOLATE THE HAZARD. Cut power, water, or gas at the source if it's safe to do so.
4๏ธโฃ COMMUNICATE FAST. Notify occupants, management, and stakeholders through a pre-agreed channel โ don't improvise this mid-crisis.
5๏ธโฃ DOCUMENT AS YOU GO. Photos, timestamps, actions taken. You'll need this for insurance, for authorities, and for your own after-action review.
6๏ธโฃ COORDINATE WITH RESPONDERS. Brief them fast โ floor plans, hazard locations, headcount.
7๏ธโฃ STABILIZE, THEN ASSESS. Once the immediate danger passes, evaluate damage and decide what can reopen.
8๏ธโฃ DEBRIEF & UPDATE YOUR PLAN. Every emergency is a free lesson โ fold it back into your emergency plan.
A checklist gets your facility ready. A framework gets your team through. Which one does yours have pinned up right now?
