The earthquake that struck Kumamoto, Japan has grown more serious in the hours since it hit. At least one person has been confirmed dead after a house collapsed, and Japanese police sources say multiple people are believed killed in the collapse of the Aeon Mall shopping center, where an explosion triggered a partial second-floor collapse. More than 100 people have now been injured, roughly double the earlier count. At least 12 buildings have collapsed across the affected area, with people still trapped in four of them as rescue crews continue working. Kumamoto airport was closed for several hours, bullet train service remains suspended, and aftershocks continue to rattle the region.
