Project Name: Estadio de Alcantara Stadium
Location: New Clark City, Capas, Tarlac
Area: Est. 40,000 sqm
Designed by: Ar. Paulo Amoroso
The architectural vision for the stadium seeks to express a modern Filipino identity—one that celebrates cultural heritage while embracing innovation and forward-looking design. The project aims to create a landmark that feels distinctly Filipino yet timeless, resonating with both present and future generations.
At the heart of the design is the reinterpretation of the Barong Tagalog, the Philippines’ national attire known for its elegance, translucency, and intricate embroidery. The façade translates the traditional barong embroidery patterns into a contemporary architectural language, creating a delicate yet monumental skin that wraps around the stadium structure. This patterned façade acts as a symbolic cultural layer, representing Filipino craftsmanship and identity on a civic scale.
The stadium’s envelope is formed by a curved, translucent polycarbonate structure that gently arches over the seating bowl. This flowing geometry evokes lightness and movement, echoing the soft drape and transparency of barong fabric. The use of translucent material allows the building to glow during the evening while remaining airy and luminous during the day.
Embedded within this envelope is the transparent barong-inspired pattern, subtly etched and layered onto the façade. The pattern filters sunlight, creating a dynamic play of light and shadow throughout the day while reinforcing the visual identity of the stadium. Rather than being purely decorative, this patterned skin performs as an environmental element, moderating sunlight while maintaining visual openness.
A key design priority is the maximization of natural light to the pitch, ensuring that the playing field receives ample daylight for optimal sporting conditions. The translucent roof and façade work together to diffuse sunlight evenly across the stadium interior, reducing glare while maintaining brightness. At the same time, the sweeping canopy ensures complete weather protection for all spectator seating, enhancing comfort without sacrificing openness.
The stadium’s form—defined by its fluid curves and lightweight structural expression—reflects both modern engineering and cultural storytelling. It balances innovation with familiarity, creating an architecture that feels both progressive and deeply rooted in Filipino tradition.
The stadium is named after Paulino Alcántara, widely regarded as the greatest Filipino footballer and Asia’s first global football superstar. Alcántara’s extraordinary legacy—particularly his historic career with FC Barcelona—helped place Asian football on the world stage during the early 20th century. Naming the stadium in his honor celebrates not only a legendary athlete, but also the pioneering Filipino spirit that continues to inspire future generations of players.
Ultimately, the stadium becomes more than a sports venue. It stands as a modern Filipino civic monument, where architecture, culture, and performance converge. Through the fusion of barong-inspired transparency, advanced materials, and elegant structural curves, the design aspires to achieve a timeless presence—one that honors heritage while projecting the Philippines confidently into the future.
