DESIGNING BEYOND 55 SQM. LOT
How do you create a comfortable family home on a 55-square-meter townhouse lot with limited opportunities for openings?
That was the challenge behind this design.
The house needed to accommodate a family of four, one pet, parking, storage, and a laundry area at the back. More importantly, it had to feel bright, breathable, and comfortable - not narrow or enclosed.
With windows restricted along the sides, the plan was shaped around the openings available at the front, rear, and above.
The interior spaces were kept visually connected, allowing daylight and air to travel deeper into the house. Openings at the front and rear encourage cross-ventilation, while high-level windows help release warm air as it rises.
On the facade, large glazed openings bring daylight into the upper floor. Operable clerestory windows provide ventilation while maintaining privacy. A concrete breeze-block wall filters sunlight and encourages airflow without fully exposing the interior.
At the back, the laundry area was planned as a practical service zone - accessible, properly ventilated, and visually separated from the main living spaces.
The layout also considers the family’s pet through clear circulation, durable finishes, easy-to-clean surfaces, and enough flexibility for everyday movement.
For many Filipino families - including those investing savings earned through years of work locally or abroad - good design is not about adding unnecessary features. It is about making every square meter purposeful and every design decision carefully considered.
This home may stand on a compact lot, but it was designed to offer comfort, privacy, and a meaningful place for the family to call their own.
Because a compact lot can still support a generous way of living.
