Diagnosis: AC system leak, low freon level

SIGNS THAT YOUR A/C SYSTEM IS LOW ON FREON/ REFRIGERANT:

1. Lack of cooling
The primary symptom associated with a low refrigerant charge is that the air blowing from the vents isn’t cold. Instead of that cold blast, the A/C system spews warm or hot air.

2. Rapid cycling of the compressor clutch
This can be heard as a clicking noise followed by high-speed radiator fan operation and surges in engine idle speed.

3. A Hissing Air Conditioner

Diagnosis: Black oil or “Black death”

What is "Black Death"?
"Black Death," as it is known by A/C system service professionals, results from a catastrophic breakdown of the refrigerant-lubricant which in turn causes excessive wear inside the compressor. In a typical case of "Black Death," metal particles are circulated throughout the system contaminating other components and necessitating either thorough flushing or complete replacement.

Normal A/C compressor operation creates some metal wear, but proper refrigerant-lubricant oil minimizes it. Running the compressor with too little of the correct PAG or mineral oil greatly increases wear and produces larger metal particles.
These particles can circulate through the A/C system, contaminate components, and restrict or block refrigerant and oil flow. Simply replacing the compressor without thoroughly flushing the system can cause the new compressor to fail again, potentially voiding the warranty and leading to another costly repair.

Solving the problem.
If an A/C system has “Black Death” contamination, it may sometimes be cleaned by flushing the system with special solvents or filtering out the debris. However, this process can be time-consuming and expensive.
At the very least, the compressor usually needs to be replaced, and other contaminated parts may also need replacement. In many cases, mechanics recommend replacing all contaminated components because it is more reliable and can be more cost-effective in the long run.
