AFTER A TEACHER LOST HIS LIFE HERE, ISN'T IT TIME FOR A TRUE 20 KPH SCHOOL ZONE?
Although there was a school zone sign and a marked cross walk, a teacher was hit and later died at this location.
So, what defines a 20 kph school zone? Is it paint and a sign? Designing a street with features that constantly slow the average driver to 20 kph is the responsibility of the city, and paint and signage alone do not meet this requirement.
Safe street design incorporates several measures that protect the street user if an error is made. For school zones, the road should be designed to protect the users and allow the pedestrians to use the cross walk if there is a cross walk request.
There are many design features that can be integrated on a school street to protect users if it is designed and implemented with a highly visible raised pedestrian treatment. Are schools not worthy of a safe and protective design of the streets?
