Great photos taken of an omnidirectional sector light, the MBL400S from MSM - Mediterráneo Señales Marítimas, installed in the Port of Taichung, Taiwan, by our local partner, Sphere International. Working with competent and professional companies like Sphere International across the Asia Pacific Region ensure that end users receive high-quality, reliable AtoN that are fit for purpose and properly selected for their intended purpose. Great job!

In 2026, we have spent a lot of time on site on the remote outer islands of Kiribati, deploying AtoN as part of our project scope for Hall Contracting on their outer islands infrastructure project in the Republic of Kiribati, which is an initiative of the Government of Kiribati, and financed by the World Bank Group and Asian Development Bank.

We recently installed the last shallow water AtoN for this project in the extensive lagoon surrounding the beautiful island of Abaiang. The project has included the design, manufacturing and installation of a total 7 x floating AtoN (buoys) and 36 x shallow water beacons across 3 x different outer islands.

This has been a unique, challenging and rewarding project experience, and there is a lot to reflect on, and a few things we have been reminded of:

𝟭. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘅. The unique scope of the shallow water beacons required structures that could be manually installed with locally available resources, whilst also being designed in compliance with internationally recognised design standards, using very location-specific environmental and metocean data. This required us to disregard many of the commonly accepted approaches to shallow water AtoN and draw on an accumulation of experience to come up with a practical, compliant design that would provide reliable, high-quality AtoN for local, inter-island and international shipping. We had the pleasure of working with the team at Arup and Hall Contracting, for a professional and open-dialogue approach to the design, whilst MSM - Mediterráneo Señales Marítimas provided design input in addition to the manufacturing of the equipment. Proof is always in the pudding, and the success of the installation program is testament to the time spent on design.

𝟮. 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴. We had the pleasure of working with different teams and groups of people at various stages of the project - from the initial site visits with the in-country project management team, the design process with Arup and MSM, the constant support and teamwork with the Hall Contracting team, through to working with the marine department and our crews of local community members for the installation. The outcome is reliable AtoN infrastructure designed and built for high performance in very remote conditions, which would not have been possible without teams and individuals heavily invested in the success of the concept and the project.

𝟯. 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝗶𝗻’𝘁 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘆. Kiribati is one of the most pristine, remote marine environments in the world. It has 33 atolls, 1.3 million square miles of ocean and – fun fact – is the only country situated in all four hemispheres. Working efficiently in these types of environments requires experience, autonomous and efficient site setups and very complex logistics, and we were fortunate to team up with Hall Contracting, who are remote site infrastructure experts.

And that is a wrap for the second atoll on our project providing AtoN equipment and services for Hall Contracting on their outer islands infrastructure project in the Republic of Kiribati.

The project, which is an initiative of the Government of Kiribati, and financed by the World Bank Group and Asian Development Bank, covers 4 separate atolls and includes the construction of critical maritime facility infrastructure and AtoN to mark channel entrances and passages through the extensive lagoon systems.

The highlight for us has been the introduction of a shallow water AtoN that has been designed to international standards for reliable performance in location conditions. One of the key design requirements was that the structure can be manually installed with locally available resources, without a reliance on heavy marine equipment and plant - that is often just not available in these remote locations.

Some AtoN data on the project so far:
- 5 x buoys deployed in channel entrances.
- 27 x lit AtoN beacons manually installed using teams that included 15 personnel engaged from the local communities.
- Approximately 27nm of navigable channel within 2 atoll lagoon systems marked with lit AtoN that comply with international standards.
- Transport, manual assembly and deployment of approximately 9 tonnes of structural members.
- Over 102 tonnes of concrete ballast manually handled and deployed.

It has been great working with Hall Contracting – a company and team that understands the unique challenges associated with the construction of maritime infrastructure in the remote Pacific - and having the personnel and resources needed to meet them. And kudos to our partner in AtoN MSM - Mediterráneo Señales Marítimas for design input and producing high quality AtoN equipment and structures, and working with us to meet the packing and logistical challenges.

We have supplied a number of end users in the Asia Pacific with the MSM - Mediterráneo Señales Marítimas range of high-resolution LED sector lights configured with oscillating boundaries. The inclusion of mechanically oscillating boundaries provides highly accurate directional information to the mariner in relation to the vessel’s location in the navigable sections of channel, allowing more time for decision-making and course direction. With a sector accuracy of less than 0.05°, these sector lanterns are custom-designed and manufactured to specifically suit navigational requirements. Latish post!

It has been a busy couple of months for us in the Central Pacific!

We were very pleased to have finally mobilised for our project providing AtoN equipment and services to the prime contractor Hall Contracting, on their outer islands infrastructure project in Kiribati.

Remote projects require detailed planning – shipping, logistics, selection of the right equipment and vessels, and ensuring self-sufficiency on site. Mobilization for this project involved unpacking of containers, consolidation and transport of equipment, charter flights to the first remote island site and finally – onto the work of installing and commissioning of AtoN. Pleasing to see the first MSM - Mediterráneo Señales Marítimas buoys, lagoon beacons and lanterns installed last week, marking the outer entrance and navigation within the main lagoon. More on the way!

It’s been a hectic start to 2026, with orders to 10 Asia-Pacific countries either completed or underway. We currently have a wide range of AtoN equipment being manufactured by MSM - Mediterráneo Señales Marítimas in Valencia, Spain, including polyurethane elastomer & polyethylene buoys, oscillating & non-oscillating port entry lights, sector lights, and a number of fixed & rotating lantern models, some with integrated AIS or remote monitoring. There are some freight challenges at the moment, with rerouting of cargo now key to ensuring timely deliveries. For any Asia-Pacific AtoN requirements, we are ready to assist!
