Reviving a 1950's House

As architects, we believe in respecting our elders, even when it comes to buildings. The structures of bygone eras have weathered earthquakes, typhoons, volcanic eruptions, and the relentless passage of time. Instead of opting for demolition, our team collaborated with the client to breathe new life into this 1950's house. Together, we added a touch of love and craftsmanship to honor its storied past while building a brighter future.

From Arch. Gelo - Back in 2002, Renovating the beach house of my girlfriend’s family. This was quite a nerve wracking experience in my young architectural career and making sure the client allowed me to continue dating (and eventually marrying) his daughter 😂🤣. A primary requirement of the client was that the house had to take full advantage of passive cooling and lighting. But the most important requirement was to keep the original design for sentimental reasons.

This was renovation was truly a wonderful experience!

The Metrojet hangar.

The Metrojet hangar project finished in 2012. This was a repair and maintenance hangar for Gulf Stream and Bombardier jets. Owned by Sir Michael Kadoorie, this was part of Metrojet Hong Kong expansion efforts into the Philippines.

The old meeting the new.

During the renovation of the 1960’s corner house, A Mañosa + Architects felt the tiles in the powder room were amazing and truly retro in design. The original floors had been changed over the years but the wall tiles were still original. Hence, the thought process of maintaining the wall tiles with the curved edges was critical. It would have been a crime to demolish. The result was a wonderful blend of the old meeting the new. And giving an extended life to such a wonderful material.

A private residence in Antipolo.

Perched on top of a hill. Overlooking the city skylines of Ortigas, Makati and Alabang, this residence is a good example of how local fundamentals for hot humid climates take advantage of passive cooling, energy efficiency, and the use of indigenous materials deeply rooted into our culture while still being sensitive to the clients’ needs and their ties to Japan.
