• What is a Prime mover and Alternator?
Prime mover and and an alternator are the two primary components that make up an electrical generator system.
Prime mover: It is the engine or mechanical power source. It Burns fuel like diesel and gasoline or uses natural force (like water, steam or wind) to create rotational mechanical energy.
Alternator: The electrical component. It takes the mechanical rotation provided by the prime mover and converts it into usable alternating current electricity through electromagnetic induction.
• How they work together
1. Mechanical input:The prime mover kicks on and spins a drive shaft.
2. Magnetic field: The rotating shaft spins a magnet inside the alternator.
3. Electricity generation: The spinning magnet creates a moving magnetic field, which induces an electric current in a set of stationary copper coils (stator) inside the alternator.
4. Power output: The alternator outputs this generated AC electricity to power homes, appliances and other electrical machinery.
• Some examples are:
1. Portable and Standby generators: The prime mover is a internal combustion engine and the alternator is the electrical housing attached to it.
2. Vehicles: In a car, the prime mover is the actual car engine ( via a belt ) and the alternator powers the cars electronics and keeps the battery charged.
3. Power Plants: The prime mover could be a massive steam turbine ( coal, nuclear or geothermal ) or a hydroelectric water turbine, which turns a giant commercial alternator to power the electrical grid.
