Long before he became the Philippine National Hero, Dr. José Rizal was already demonstrating excellence in the field of land surveying—a profession built on mathematics, precision, and public service. His legacy reflects the enduring importance of accurate land measurement in nation-building.
At the heart of the country’s geodetic history is Station Balanacan in Marinduque, the historical geodetic origin of the Philippines. Established in 1906, it became the reference point for the Luzon Datum of 1911, laying the foundation for the Philippine national geodetic control network and generations of cadastral, engineering, and mapping surveys.
Today, the profession has evolved into Geodetic Engineering, where licensed professionals harness cutting-edge technologies such as GNSS/GPS RTK, Robotic Total Stations, UAV/Drone Mapping, LiDAR, GIS, and satellite positioning to support land administration, infrastructure development, disaster risk reduction, environmental management, and smart cities.
