Despite the destruction caused by the flash flood in Nepal, this house remained standing while many structures around it were severely damaged.
While we cannot determine the exact engineering details or why this particular house survived from a photo alone, it highlights an important lesson for every homeowner: the structural integrity of your home matters.
When building a house, don’t focus only on tiles, paint, ceilings, cabinets, and beautiful finishes. Pay close attention to what will actually carry and protect your home:
• Proper foundation design based on actual soil and site conditions
• Correctly designed columns, beams, and structural connections
• Quality concrete, reinforcement, and construction materials
• Proper drainage and site development, especially in flood-prone locations
• Compliance with structural plans and building standards
• Most importantly, qualified architects and engineers who design according to the conditions and risks of the property
A strong foundation does not make a house disaster-proof—extreme floods, erosion, landslides, earthquakes, and other forces can overwhelm even well-built structures. But proper engineering and quality construction can significantly improve a building’s resilience.
