Soil Boring Test- is a geotechnical investigation where a drilling rig extracts core samples of soil and bedrock from beneath your property. It is essential for measuring soil bearing capacity, detecting groundwater levels, and ensuring a safe foundation design for your construction project.
How the Test is Conducted
•Site Preparation: The proposed construction footprint is cleared and prepared for the drilling rig.
•Drilling and Sampling: A machine drills into the ground, taking samples at set intervals (e.g., every 1.5 to 3 meters) or whenever the soil type changes.
•Standard Pe*******on Test (SPT): While drilling, engineers drop a standardized 63.5 kg (140 lb) hammer into the hole and count the blows required to drive a sampler into the ground. This yields a N-value that indicates soil density and strength.
•Laboratory Testing: Extracted core samples are brought to a lab to test for moisture content, grain size, and shear strength.
Why It Is Required?
•Building Permits: Many local government units and building officials in the Philippines require geotechnical soil reports (which rely on soil borings) before issuing permits, especially for buildings of 3+ stories or structures built on challenging terrain.
•Foundation Design: Structural engineers use the report to determine exactly how wide, deep, or strong your foundation footings and piles need to be.
•Risk Mitigation: Borings identify hidden risks like liquefaction, soft clay, organic matter, or high water tables that could cause your home to settle or crack.
