The pièce de résistance of The Apo View is the new ballroom which will sit on the previous roof deck pool. This was tricky because how do you insert something this big on an existing building - either complementing the facade or contrasting it. We went for both! Elevating the overall look without overwhelming it.

Named The Clerestory. A lighter structure with half glass window and half mirrored walls, just like the lobby! Visualizing the existing white building as a white dress and the new ballroom (as well as the new Top of the Apo) as the finishing accessory - the jewelry that elevates an outfit.

We are super excited for this! Event organizers do not have to do much decorating because hopefully the venue itself is elegant and inspiring. We have started the mock-up for the "flower" columns! The budget has doubled since but I hope we can complete it all the way, true to the design.

One of the enduring architectural challenges in the Philippines is balancing security with climate responsiveness. The widespread need for security grilles, together with protection from the tropical sun and heavy rains, often compromises the clarity and elegance of a building's façade.

This proposal reimagines the security grille as an integral architectural element rather than a visual obstruction. By using varying species and diameters of bamboo, the façade functions as both a protective screen and a passive louver, filtering sunlight, encouraging ventilation, and shielding the interiors from rain. The resulting composition adds warmth, texture, and depth, giving the building a distinct identity.

Torched bamboo is specified for the exterior application to enhance its durability and resistance to weathering, while celebrating the natural character of the material.

The integrated planter boxes further activate the façade by introducing layers of greenery and texture. Serving both as a visual amenity and productive landscape, they provide space for herbs and vegetables that can be cultivated for the ground-floor restaurant, strengthening the relationship between architecture, landscape, and everyday use.

Thank you Mindanow Network for this special feature!

"In this episode of BAYI, we meet Ar. Christine Buyco-Sy, a Davao-born architect, urban planner, and recent World Architecture Festival awardee.

Growing up with a family bred of architects and engineers, Ar. Christine knew she would be pursuing the same path. While her priorities changed over the years, her interest in design never did. She continued learning, studying, and keeping up with the profession while embracing motherhood.

Years later, she returned to architecture, established her own design studio, and brought her work to one of the world's most respected architecture platforms. Her story reflects on the hope of everything working out in the end, why stepping back is not the same as giving up, and that a dream paused is never a dream lost."

Who is the city for? A French professor at NUS asks this question. He talked about “Potemkin village”, an anecdote often used in urban design and planning as a cautionary tale about superficial development.

According to the legend, through newly acquired territories (after the Russo-Turkish War (1768–1774), Potemkin supposedly built fake, decorative villages along her route—just façades with happy peasants—to give the illusion of prosperity and successful colonization.

In urban design, a “Potemkin” approach means:

* Creating impressive-looking projects that lack real substance
* Designing spaces mainly for appearances, tourism, or political signaling
* Ignoring long-term livability, community needs, or economic reality

Indeed, Avally Design Studio is very mindful of designing anti-Potemkin master plans. Thanks to the influence of Francois Decoster!

Groundbreaking of Las Terrazas Discovery Grounds today! Designing a children playground and adult fitness pods - a social space surrounded by fully-matured trees is a happy project! As with all our projects, evidence-based data drives our design and a seemingly simple playground is not that straightforward indeed! 🙂

We map out the physical and psychological growth of toddlers till tweens and provided each stage with age-appropriate play equipment. Make it too hard and it discourages young ones. Make it too easy and they use the slide for example head down first to make it exciting!

Pirate ship for imaginative play from 2-5 years where social skills start to develop, to the most popular of all - the zip line from 5-12 years old and more! We are excited for the young ones of Las Terrazas. Congratulations! 🥳

Avally Design Studio designed this home to complement the tropical weather in the Philippines. It features large overhangs and high ceilings to create a comfortable indoor-outdoor space. Large windows were also used to allow for filtered sunlight and wind cross-ventilation, maximizing the design’s suitability with the environment.
