🏠 THE ROOF SHOULDN’T BE THE FIRST PLACE YOU THINK ABOUT RAINWATER.
Many homeowners choose roofing based on color, profile, and appearance.
But during construction, there is a more important question:
Where will all that rainwater go?
A beautiful roof can still create problems if the gutters, downspouts, drainage lines, and ground discharge were treated as separate items instead of one complete system.
Before roofing and exterior finishing are completed, the team should coordinate:
✓ Roof slope and intended direction of water flow
✓ Gutter size, position, slope, joints, and supports
✓ Downspout locations before façade details are finalized
✓ Proper discharge away from foundations and entrances
✓ Connection to the project’s stormwater drainage system
✓ Overflow paths for unusually heavy rainfall
✓ Waterproofing and flashing at roof penetrations and critical junctions
✓ Accessibility for future gutter and downspout cleaning
✓ Drainage around balconies, canopies, and roof decks
✓ Actual water testing before final acceptance
One common mistake is thinking:
“May gutter naman, okay na.”
A gutter only collects the water.
The entire system must collect it, move it, discharge it, and keep it away from areas where it can cause damage.
Our preferred sequence:
ROOF → GUTTER → DOWNSPOUT → DRAINAGE → SAFE DISCHARGE
This is especially worth planning carefully in a climate where intense rainfall can expose drainage weaknesses quickly.
At JMG Construction & General Merchandise, we believe good construction doesn’t simply keep rain from entering the house.
It plans where the water will go before the rain arrives.
