Infrastructure plays a key role in how communities across New Zealand operate, from lighting and transport to energy and water systems. McKay delivers and maintains these essential services, supporting reliable and safe public environments.

Along Wellington’s waterfront, one of the city’s most heavily used public areas, improving safety and usability was a key priority for Wellington City Council.

Working in partnership with the Council, McKay proudly delivered a new streetlighting installation along the Te Papa and Taranaki Promenades, improving visibility and supporting safer access for the many people who use the area each day.

The project included an integrated lighting control system, installed over water and in full public view during the peak summer period.

McKay is proud to be nominated as a finalist for the Arthur Mead Award at the Auckland Awards for Engineering New Zealand Te Ao Rangahau. This nomination sits within the Infrastructure category, recognising our work on Project E-Alia - five solar and battery-powered electric vessels delivered to the communities of Manono and Namu'a in Samoa.

Officially handed over in December 2025, the project was part of the CAP-IT (Climate Action Pathways for Island Transport) programme, supporting Samoa's transition to low-carbon maritime transport through a Japanese-funded Green Transformation initiative, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme.

This recognition reflects McKay's commitment to delivering innovative, sustainable engineering solutions that create meaningful outcomes for communities across the Pacific.

New Zealand capability was on show in the Pacific earlier this week, with McKay Managing Director Lindsay Faithfull joining the Prime Minister-led trade delegation to Samoa and Tonga - a recognition of McKay's long-standing work in the region.

While in Samoa, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon was able to see McKay's capability firsthand, visiting Port Apia to view the recently delivered E-Alia project in operation — a fleet of five solar and battery-powered vessels helping transform low-carbon transport between the islands.

The visit was a powerful example of how New Zealand expertise is supporting practical, sustainable infrastructure solutions across the Pacific, strengthening both connectivity and regional partnerships.

Luxon viewed the E-Alia boats during his Pacific visit.

For over 115 years, 8 March has been recognised as International Women's Day 2026 (IWD), a day to celebrate the achievements of women and continue driving progress toward gender equality.

In traditionally male-dominated industries like construction, infrastructure, and industrial, recognising IWD is especially important. Creating opportunities, providing mentorship, and supporting women to grow their skills not only strengthens individual career journeys but also builds diverse, capable teams.

At McKay, fostering this growth across our multi-sector business benefits both our people and the projects and communities we serve. The 2026 IWD theme, Give to Gain, reflects the value of investing in others, sharing time, knowledge, and support to create opportunities that extend far beyond the individual.

This week, we’re sharing Q&As with women across McKay in different roles, highlighting what Give to Gain means to them, how they’ve supported others or been supported, and what these experiences mean in their careers and everyday work.

Today, we’re sharing Chané Botha’s story, where she reflects on her career journey and the importance of giving back.

McKay is proud to announce the successful completion of the first sea trial of its 10-metre solar and battery-powered electric catamaran, E-Alia. The two-week programme of sea trials, held last month in Whangārei Harbour, marked a significant milestone in the project’s development.

The trials showed impressive results, with smooth handling, tight turns, and successful docking tests, proving the vessel's reliability for both passenger and cargo transport. E-Alia’s full-day operation across Manono and Upolu demonstrated its capability to cover 7 nautical miles.

Constructed by McKay in collaboration with Circa Marine Limited, the E-Alia is the first of five vessels that will be delivered to Samoa as part of the Japan-funded Climate Action Pathways for Island Transport (CAP-IT) initiative, a key component of the $37 million (USD) Pacific Green Transformation initiative implemented by the United Nations Development Programme.

Having completed the design, procurement, fabrication, build, and local sea trials in under six months - this milestone boosts McKay’s capacity to deliver marine renewable solutions across New Zealand and the Pacific. Launching in November 2025, Project E-Alia sets a new benchmark for sustainable transport.

McKay has been appointed as the head supplier to deliver the E-Alia project as part of the Climate Action Pathways for Island Transport (CAP-IT) Project in Samoa.

The CAP-IT project is part of a $37 million (USD) Japanese-funded Green Transformation initiative implemented by United Nations Development Programme that will also support green transportation projects in Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, and Vanuatu. $15.3 million (USD) of these funds have been allocated to Samoa.

McKay will design and manufacture five solar/battery-propelled electric catamaran vessels to transport passengers between five villages on the small islands of Manono and Namua.

Reflect. Celebrate. Reconnect! Matariki holds special meaning at McKay. It reminds us to honour our whānau, loved ones, and those who have helped shape our journey, while encouraging us to reflect and look ahead with purpose. It is a time to recognise our accomplishments from the year and use those lessons to guide the way forward.

On Thursday 19th, teams across our branches marked Te Rā Aro ki Matariki, sharing kai, reconnecting, and celebrating the opportunities this new season brings. The values of Matariki are woven into how we grow as a company and how we support our people to thrive.

To help shape moments like these, we’ve established Te Ara Whakamua — our employee-led cultural working group dedicated to embedding Māori values and perspectives across McKay. Read more about this initiative here; https://lnkd.in/epUF97N3

11,882 light fittings, 383 kilometres of cables, and 330 switchboards, varying from main switchboards to smaller distribution boards, represent just part of McKay’s involvement in the Waikeria Prison Development Project over the past 5 years.

Earlier this month, Stage 1 of the project was completed, setting a new standard for prisoner rehabilitation in New Zealand. The new modern facility, situated across 21 hectares within a secure perimeter near Te Awamutu, comprises 500 beds, along with a dedicated 96-bed mental health and addiction centre known as Hikitia.

McKay is proud to have been involved in such an important project in New Zealand. Contributing to a facility that establishes a new standard for prisoner rehabilitation has been both a privilege and a responsibility that our team thrived on.

As the project moves into Stage 2, McKay wishes everyone involved the same success achieved in Stage 1.

The completion of Stage 1 marks the end of a 5-year project for McKay, who was appointed as the principal electrical contractor by CPB Contractors in October 2019. In November of the same year, McKay established its permanent on-site presence tailored to the project’s unique remote location. This ...

McKay is delighted to announce our recent acquisition of Marine & Industrial Electrics Limited (MIE), an electrical contracting company based in Whangārei that has been serving the marine sector for nearly 30 years.

“This acquisition is more than just a business decision; it is an opportunity to leverage our combined strengths to deliver innovative solutions to our clients. As we integrate MIE’s expertise into our marine projects, we are positioned to meet the evolving needs of the marine industry with renewed strength and creativity.” Said Mark McGinley, McKay’s Executive General Manager - Technology.

With the talented team at MIE now fully integrated into McKay and operating as a division of our National Marine team, we look forward to collaborating on innovative projects that address the evolving needs of our clients.

As we continue to strengthen our position in the marine sector by combining our expertise and resources, both companies are poised to enhance their offerings and drive innovation for our valued clients in the marine community.

The acquisition comes as the Northland-founded company continues to make waves in the marine sector, expanding its marine services. Since April 2025, the skilled workforce of MIE has been fully integrated into McKay. They will continue to operate under the MIE brand as part of McKay’s National Mar...
