Whangārei waterfront, about 1900

This historic black-and-white photograph shows a wide view across the Whangārei waterfront towards the town and surrounding hills. The handwritten caption at the top reads “The Waterfront about 1900.”

In the foreground, an unsealed road curves past a grazing horse, fenced land and gardens. Trees and shrubs grow in the shallow water along the near bank, while several small boats are moored across the water.

On the far bank, houses and other buildings sit among gardens and tall trees, with more of the town visible behind them. A wooden bridge on the right connects the waterfront to the road in the foreground.

The house with the verandah on the far bank, to the left of centre, resembles the house in your previous photograph. It may be Reyburn House, but its identity has not yet been confirmed.

Town Basin 1900's - This photograph shows Whangārei Town Basin around 1909. The house on the right may be Reyburn House in its original waterfront setting, although its identity in this image still needs to be confirmed.

Anais Segales (1837)

An old French rose which is very early flowering. Blooms of deep lilac mauve that fade to paler shades of mauve and grey. Beautifully formed flowers with a strong fragrance. Just delightful. This rose is found growing wild in the countryside in many parts of NZ.

The Rose: In 1837, French breeder Jean-Pierre Vibert named the antique Gallica rose Rosa 'Anaïs Ségalas' after her; it is well-known in heritage gardens and semi-wild in New Zealand.

Anaïs Ségalas (born Anne Caroline Ménard; 1814–1895) was a 19th-century French poet, playwright, and novelist

Reyburn House Gardens - please DO NOT pick or pull out roses, flowers or plants from our gardens at Town Basin. These gardens are looked after by Northland Society of Arts volunteers and Northland Heritage Rose Society volunteers.

You are more than welcome to join the monthly Reyburn House Garden Working Bees and pull out weeds.
