5 Signs Your Hot Water Cylinder Is Failing

1. Rusty or Discoloured Water

If your hot water comes out brown, yellow, or rusty, it could mean the inside of your hot water cylinder is corroding. This is often an early warning sign the cylinder may be nearing the end of its life.

2. Water Around the Cylinder

Any moisture, dripping, or pooling water around your cylinder should be investigated quickly. Small leaks can become major failures if left too long.

3. Inconsistent Hot Water

Running out of hot water faster than usual, fluctuating temperatures, or water that never gets properly hot can indicate failing elements, thermostats, or sediment buildup inside the cylinder.

4. Strange Noises

Banging, rumbling, or popping noises are commonly caused by sediment collecting and hardening at the bottom of the tank. This makes your system work harder and can shorten the cylinder’s lifespan.

5. Your Cylinder Is Over 10-15 Years Old

Most hot water cylinders have a lifespan of around 10–15 years depending on maintenance, water quality, and usage. 15-25 years for low pressure units due to less stress operating at a lower pressure. If yours is getting older, it may be time to start planning for a replacement before it fails unexpectedly.

When fats and Cooking oils cool, they mixes with water and solidify inside your pipes, building up over time and causing stubborn blockages, pollution and costly plumbing repairs.

Here are a couple of simple tips we recommend to help avoid those expensive fixes:
• Let fats and oils cool, then pour them into a container and bin them 🗑️
• Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel before washing

A little prevention now can save a big headache later!
