We made MacBlack business cards out of bits of timber.

Why?

Because we can.

A little bit different from your standard business card, and a good excuse to put some of those timber offcuts to use.

Because when you work with timber all day, even your business cards might as well be made of it.

One of the best things about working with real timber is that it doesn’t come out looking exactly the same every time.

Grain, knots, colour and all those little differences are what give each piece its character.

That’s why we love it.

There’s usually something happening in the MacBlack workshop.

Timber being milled, slabs being prepared, benchtops taking shape, furniture coming together — and plenty of pieces waiting to become something else entirely.

We never quite know what the next project will look like.

Out the door today: a macrocarpa benchtop and kitchen island top.

Both made from solid macrocarpa, with plenty of natural grain and character. They’re ready for their next stop — and we’re looking forward to seeing them in their new home.

Another couple of pieces leaving the workshop. 👌

A quick look at what we’ve got happening in the shop at the moment.

There’s a few different projects underway, and we’re excited to see what all these pieces of timber turn into.

More to come as they start taking shape.

Another NZ Black Walnut coffee table taking shape in the shop.

We couldn't help noticing how some of the knots in this one look a bit like the surface of a certain planet. 🪐

Just one of those things you start noticing when you stare at timber as much as we do.

The natural character is already doing most of the work. We just have to bring it out.

A few timber samples from around the MacBlack workshop.

Bonus points if you can guess what each one is. 👀

There’s a lot of variety in timber — different species, grain, colour and character can make every piece look completely different.

How many can you identify?

From the shop today:

A stack of plain old macrocarpa slabs that are about to become some seriously good-looking benchtops.

There’s a bit of work between this stage and the finished product, but that’s the fun part. Once they’re dressed, joined and finished, that natural grain and character is really going to come out.

We’ll show you how they turn out!

We make coasters?!

Yep. Turns out all those little bits of beautiful timber are good for more than sitting around in the workshop.

We’re making solid timber coasters from our offcuts, giving small pieces of good timber a second life — and they look pretty bloody good on the coffee table too.
