⚑ PART POWER AT HOME? CHECK YOUR SWITCHBOARD FIRST ⚑

Have you ever had power go out in just part of your home, while everything else keeps working?

It could be as simple as a tripped RCD or circuit breaker. An RCD is a safety switch that can protect several circuits, so when it trips, you might lose lights or power points in only certain areas of your home.

Before calling for help, there are a few simple checks you can safely make at your switchboard. πŸ‘‡

πŸ”Ή Look for an RCD or circuit breaker sitting in the OFF or middle position
πŸ”Ή Reset the RCD following the steps in our handy guide
πŸ”Ή Bring circuits back on one at a time
πŸ”Ή Check appliances on the affected circuit. If an appliance causes the power to trip again, leave it unplugged

⚠️ Safety comes first. Only operate switches on the front of your switchboard and never remove the cover or repeatedly reset an RCD that keeps tripping.

If it won’t reset, continues to trip with appliances unplugged, or there’s heat, a burning smell or sparking, keep clear and call an electrician.

Save this post for next time. Knowing what to check could help you quickly identify the problem and know when it’s time to call in the professionals.

We’ve put together a range of free, fun and engaging electrical safety activities for local kids. They're designed to keep little hands and minds busy while helping them learn some important electrical safety information along the way. πŸ–οΈβš‘

There are activities to colour, design, spot hazards, solve challenges and learn, making them a great option for a quiet moment at home or something different to do during the holiday break.

There were some great additional observations, with several people spotting that the heater was positioned too close to the soft furnishings. Remember- 1 metre from the heater for anything that can burn. πŸ”₯πŸ›‹οΈ

The main safety message from this blooper is that you should never DIY or improvise with plugs, sockets or cords. Trying to make an appliance, cord or plug β€œfit” by cutting, joining, modifying or creating your own adaptor can result in a serious electric shock, caused by exposed or incorrectly connected conductors. It can also create a fire hazard due to incorrect wiring or overheating. If a plug or cord is damaged, replace it appropriately or get a qualified electrician to check it.⚑

🌧️⚑ Wet weather and electrical home safety

With a wet week ahead for Buller, it's likely that most of us will be spending more time indoors, using heaters, dryers and other electrical appliances. It’s a good time to make sure your home’s electrical systems are safe and reduce the risk of electrical fires.

πŸ”Œ Check cords and plugs
Look for frayed, damaged or overheating cords, plugs and power points. If something is damaged, stop using it and have it checked by a qualified electrician.

πŸ”₯ Don’t overload power points
Avoid plugging multiple high-powered appliances into the same outlet or relying on double adaptors and power boards.

🧺 Give dryers some attention
Clean your dryer’s lint filter after every use and make sure the dryer has adequate ventilation. Never leave a dryer running when you leave home or go to bed.

πŸ”₯ Use heaters safely
Keep heaters well away from curtains, bedding, furniture and other combustible materials. Don't use damaged heaters or extension leads that aren't suitable for the appliance.

πŸ’§ Keep electricity dry
Never use electrical appliances with wet hands or while standing in water. Keep power boards, extension leads and electrical equipment away from wet areas.

πŸ”‹ Be careful with charging devices
Avoid charging phones, laptops and other devices on beds or soft furnishings where heat can build up. Use the correct charger and don't use damaged cables.

Burning smells, buzzing or crackling sounds, flickering lights, sparking or unusually warm power points can indicate an electrical problem. Don't ignore the warning signsβ€”contact a qualified electrician.
