Today, we’re celebrating all the amazing dads, grandads, stepdads, father figures and soon-to-be dads in our community. 🎉

We’d also like to give a special shout-out to the incredible dads in our ESL team who dedicate their time and skills to keeping our homes, businesses and community safe and powered. ⚡️

From those early morning call-outs and after-hours jobs, to working through the day to help customers when they need it most, our electricians are always ready to lend a hand- even when it means leaving the family warm in bed and heading out before the sun comes up! 🌅🔧

🏆 ESL Spot the Blooper – We Have a Winner! 🔌🔥

A big congratulations to Margaret Corrie, the winner of our ‘Spot the Blooper’ challenge for August! 🎉👏

Margaret successfully spotted the looped plug/socket arrangement in the image. 🔌👀

A huge well done to everyone else who identified this hazard- stay tuned for the next one! everyone who guesses correctly, and likes and shares the challenge will be entered into the draw each month. 👏

There were some great additional observations, with several people spotting that the heater was positioned too close to the soft furnishings. Remember- 1 metre from the heater for anything that can burn. 🔥🛋️

The main safety message from this blooper is that you should never DIY or improvise with plugs, sockets or cords. Trying to make an appliance, cord or plug “fit” by cutting, joining, modifying or creating your own adaptor can result in a serious electric shock, caused by exposed or incorrectly connected conductors. It can also create a fire hazard due to incorrect wiring or overheating. If a plug or cord is damaged, replace it appropriately or get a qualified electrician to check it.⚡

🌧️⚡ Wet weather and electrical home safety

With a wet week ahead for Buller, it's likely that most of us will be spending more time indoors, using heaters, dryers and other electrical appliances. It’s a good time to make sure your home’s electrical systems are safe and reduce the risk of electrical fires.

🔌 Check cords and plugs
Look for frayed, damaged or overheating cords, plugs and power points. If something is damaged, stop using it and have it checked by a qualified electrician.

🔥 Don’t overload power points
Avoid plugging multiple high-powered appliances into the same outlet or relying on double adaptors and power boards.

🧺 Give dryers some attention
Clean your dryer’s lint filter after every use and make sure the dryer has adequate ventilation. Never leave a dryer running when you leave home or go to bed.

🔥 Use heaters safely
Keep heaters well away from curtains, bedding, furniture and other combustible materials. Don't use damaged heaters or extension leads that aren't suitable for the appliance.

💧 Keep electricity dry
Never use electrical appliances with wet hands or while standing in water. Keep power boards, extension leads and electrical equipment away from wet areas.

🔋 Be careful with charging devices
Avoid charging phones, laptops and other devices on beds or soft furnishings where heat can build up. Use the correct charger and don't use damaged cables.

⚡ Watch for warning signs
Burning smells, buzzing or crackling sounds, flickering lights, sparking or unusually warm power points can indicate an electrical problem. Don't ignore the warning signs—contact a qualified electrician.

⚠️ Power Point Safety with Glen

When we spot unsafe electrical setups in homes or businesses, we share it, because keeping our community safe is at the heart of what we do 💚

You might know Glen as one of the community's hard working firefighters, but we're also lucky to have him as one of our amazing, longstanding electricians. Here’s his advice on power point safety:

A cracked or broken power point isn’t just cosmetic-it can expose live wires and cause shock, burns, or fire. Even if it still works, it’s not safe!

⚡ Broken faceplates or loose fittings can leave live wiring accessible, meaning:

• Accidental contact can result in serious electric shock or electrocution.
• Metal objects (keys, tools, appliances) can make contact and cause arcing which is extremely dangerous

🚨 Warning Signs to act on immediately:

• Cracks, chips, or missing pieces on the outlet
• Loose or wobbly power points
• Discolouration, burn marks, or melted plastic
• Sparking when plugging in devices

✅ What You Should Do:

• Do not use the damaged power point
• Turn off power at the switchboard if safe to do so
• Keep others away from the area, especially tamariki
• Arrange repair by a qualified electrician as soon as possible
• Never attempt DIY electrical repairs
