What does solar actually cost? EECA has done the sums.

A 5 kW system, the size that suits most three-person households, is about $11,500 installed. It saves $1,000 or more a year, so it pays itself back in around 7 to 10 years, and then runs for another 15 or so.

Most major banks will lend for a solar installation at 0 to 1% as a mortgage top-up.

Three cars make up about 60% of the EVs people save on Cogo: the BYD Atto 3, the Nissan Leaf and the Hyundai IONIQ. And 94% of them are used.

The Leaf turns up three times at three different battery sizes, which tells you people are working out how little battery they can live with at a price they can reach.

"Novated lease" sounds like jargon. It is simpler than it sounds.

Your employer leases the car, the payments come out of your pay before tax, and you drive it like your own. In Australia those EVs are exempt from fringe benefit tax, which is what makes the numbers work.

New Zealand has a lower tax rate on employer-provided EVs (from April 2027), but no exemption.

In Australia, ordinary earners lease new EVs straight out of their pre-tax pay, and the usual tax on a vehicle benefit does not apply. It is a big reason so many Australians are driving new electric cars.

New Zealand has no equivalent scheme. Rewiring Aotearoa is backing one, called the EV Salary Boost.

Which upgrade should you do first?

Whatever your house is doing worst. A 1960s place with an old cylinder and a gas heater needs something completely different to a new build with a heat pump already on the wall.

If you want a rule of thumb though, start with whatever runs constantly. Hot water runs all year. Heating runs all winter. That is where the money is.

Less than 4% of Kiwi homes have solar on the roof. In Australia it is about 33%.

RNZ found the highest rate in Wānaka at 17%.

Worth remembering solar is not the only way to bring a power bill down. Hot water and space heating form a significant part of a typical bill, and both are usually cheaper to sort than buying solar.

☀️ When home energy upgrades are mentioned, solar panels usually come to mind. Hot water heat pumps are less thought of, but quote requests via Cogo show that's changing.

Of the upgrade quote requests New Zealand homeowners have sent to installers through Cogo, the second most popular is for a hot water heat pump: 27%.

Solar panels alone, or with a battery: 41%. Heat pump for space heating: 20%.

Heating and hot water upgrades together make up just under half of all quote requests. Which figures, since hot water alone is about 30% of household energy use.
