Here's a mistake we see all the time: people size their solar system for exactly what they're using today, then a year or two later, add an EV charger or a heat pump, and end up paying for a second install to catch up.

A typical Wellington 6kW system runs $12,000–$18,000 installed. Sizing it a little bigger up front, with future EV charging or extra appliances in mind, is far cheaper than retrofitting later.

If there's any chance an EV, heat pump, or bigger power needs are in your future, it's worth planning for it now, not after.

Does solar keep your lights on in a power cut? 🔌
Most people assume the answer is yes. It's actually one of the most common myths we hear.

Here's the truth: solar panels alone shut off automatically during a power outage, it's a safety requirement, to stop power flowing back into the grid while lines crews are working on it.

So if the power goes out, your panels go quiet too, even in the middle of a sunny day.

To actually keep your lights on during a blackout, you need a battery with a backup circuit wired in. That's what gives you real power independence when the grid goes down.

It's one of the most common questions we get, and the answer depends on what you're actually trying to solve.

If your main goal is lowering your power bill → start with solar, sized to match your daytime usage. That's where the biggest, fastest savings come from.

If you're more focused on outage resilience, or you're often exporting unused power at a low buy-back rate → battery is your next step. It lets you use more of the power you're already generating, instead of sending it back to the grid for cents.

Want both eventually? Great! Solar and battery work brilliantly together. But you don't need to do it all on day one. Starting with the right piece for your goals is often the smarter move, both for your budget and your results.

Here's the honest answer: Wellington doesn't actually have the priciest power in NZ — but our long summer days and cooler panel temps mean systems here punch above their weight. A typical Wellington solar system pays for itself in around 7-9 years. After that? The power's essentially free.

Charging your EV from a regular household socket might work short-term, but it's not built for the regular, high-draw charging an EV needs.

For it to be safe and compliant, you need a dedicated circuit with the correct RCD installed.
