Still working Fridays? That’s rough.

Don’t keep scrolling…

3-day weekend. Every week.

EXPERIENCED SOLAR ELECTRICIAN WANTED

$40–$45/hr | 4-Day Week | Waipapa, Bay of Islands

We’re looking for an experienced NZ Registered Electrician to join our team at Leighton Electrical.

Solar experience is a must. If you already have your solar endorsement, even better.

We’re after someone who knows their stuff, is self-driven and motivated, can problem solve and think outside the box when needed.

You need to be a genuine team player, someone who takes pride in their work and workmanship, is passionate about the electrical trade and actually enjoys what they do.

We want someone who sees a problem and looks for the solution, is happy to take ownership and responsibility, and is keen to keep learning and upskilling.

We don’t expect you to know everything — but you need to have the drive to figure things out, ask questions, learn and improve.

If your first response to something you haven’t seen before is “let’s figure it out”, you’ll probably fit in pretty well.

HOW WE WORK

For us, quality comes before speed.

Speed comes naturally with experience, but we’d rather a job is done properly than rushed.

We want tidy, compliant and safe work that you’re proud to put your name to, we’re proud to put our name to, and the customer is happy with.

Basically, if you wouldn’t want it installed at your own house, don’t install it at theirs.

That standard is a big part of how Leighton and the team have built a great reputation over the last 10 years, and we want someone who shares the same attitude towards their work.

Being a good electrician here also isn’t just about being good on the tools.

We use Fergus to run our jobs, and keeping on top of your paperwork each day is a core part of the role.

Job notes, labour, materials and photos need to be entered correctly and kept up to date. It keeps the wheels turning, allows the office to invoice jobs correctly and means everyone knows where each job is at.

Yes, we know — paperwork isn’t the reason anyone became an electrician. Unfortunately, Leighton and Blair still need to know what you did all day.

Taking ownership of the whole job — from the workmanship through to getting the paperwork done properly — is part of the role.

THE 4-DAY WEEK

We work Monday to Thursday, 7:30am–5:30pm with a 30-minute lunch.

Our standard working week is 38 hours and we top your pay up to 40 hours where the week’s workload allows.

Work 38 hours — paid 40.
Work 39 hours — paid 40.
Work 40 hours — paid 40.

We plan our work and try to get the crew their full 2-hour top-up each week, but electrical work doesn’t always go exactly to plan. Sometimes a job needs finishing or rolls over and the extra hours need to be worked.

Anything worked over 40 hours is paid at 1.5x.

At a $40–$45/hr base rate, the full 2-hour weekly top-up can be worth $4,160–$4,680 extra per year.

And regardless — Friday, Saturday and Sunday are your weekend.

What you do with Friday is up to you. Fishing, golf, kids, jobs around home, sitting on the couch — we don’t really care. You just won’t be at work.

WHAT WE OFFER

* $40–$45/hr depending on experience
* 4-day working week
* Up to 2 hours’ additional pay each week
* Overtime over 40 hours at 1.5x
* 3-day weekend every week
* Ongoing training and upskilling
* Genuine opportunities to progress
* Weekly toolbox meetings
* Regular crew catch-ups and socials
* Good workshop and team environment

And there’s a coffee machine at the workshop. We’re electricians, not animals.

COMPANY WORK = COMPANY TOOLS

We don’t expect you to wreck your own gear doing our work.

If it’s company work, we believe we should supply the gear you need to do it.

You’ll be supplied with a Milwaukee or Makita battery tool kit, multifunction electrical tester, company mobile and uniform.

Your own tools can stay your own.

If we wear it out making money, it probably shouldn’t be your wallet replacing it.

A BIT ABOUT US

Leighton Electrical has been operating for 10 years and we’re based from our workshop at Unit 6, 32 Klinac Lane, Waipapa.

We’re Master Electricians and Electrical Inspectors and have built a good team that enjoys what they do.

Then there’s Leighton and Blair.

Leighton — Director, Electrical Inspector and our fearsome leader. He’s extremely passionate about the industry, which unfortunately for the crew means he also thinks 7:30am on a Monday toolbox meeting is the perfect time to throw out a regulation or testing question.

Usually before most of the team have consumed enough caffeine to properly understand what he’s asking.

He’s super keen, loves the technical side of the industry and is always pushing the team to learn, question things and become better electricians.

Then there’s Blair, our Operations Manager and basically the glue that keeps the whole thing together.

If Leighton is coming up with another idea, there’s a fair chance Blair is somewhere behind the scenes figuring out how we’re actually going to make it happen.

He keeps the jobs, staff and day-to-day operation moving and seems to work at just about every hour under the sun — and occasionally every hour without it. We’re fairly convinced he’s part night owl.

Between Leighton and Blair, somehow it all keeps running.

The work is varied — solar and battery systems, new builds, renovations, heat pumps and air conditioning, CCTV, alarms, EV charging, switchboards, fault finding, servicing, inspections and plenty more.

You won’t be stuck doing the same thing every day.

Some days you’ll be installing solar and batteries, another day fault finding, another on a new build. That’s part of what keeps it interesting.

Solar and battery work is a growing part of what we do, which is why we’re specifically looking for someone who already has good solar experience.

We’re a growing company and want people around us who want to grow with it.

If you’re motivated, bring the right attitude and put the effort in, we’ll back you with training, opportunities and career progression.

You grow, the team grows and the company grows.

LOOKING TO RELOCATE?

If you’re living elsewhere in NZ and thinking about making a move north, we’d be keen to hear from you too.

We’re based in Waipapa in the Bay of Islands.

Work four solid days, then have Friday, Saturday and Sunday to actually enjoy living up here.

And yes, it’s pretty hard to complain about a three-day weekend in the Bay of Islands.

If you’re an experienced electrician with solar experience and you’re looking for a change, send us your CV or give us a call for a confidential chat.

Even if you’re reasonably happy where you are, there’s no harm in having a confidential chat. Your boss doesn’t need to know you read this far.

This one was led by Blair, and honestly, the way he has left this job amazes me.

The attention to detail, clean installation, tidy work area, Tesla information cards left on-site and a complete handover pack supplied to the customer.

It’s not just about installing a great solar and battery system—it’s about how we leave the job and look after the customer afterwards.

We have a great team at Leighton Electrical, and we’re very proud of the standard they continue to deliver.

Well done, Blair and the team 👏 Tesla powerwall 3, 11.2kw array.
