Permaculture Consultation and Design, specialising in domestic gardens and lifestyle blocks. I'm also a keen composter and worm farmer.

As a passionate gardener I have created Vital Harvest to help inspire and educate others about growing their own food. I run the kitchen gardens at The Falls Retreat Bistro in Waitawheta and am currently running a series of workshops created especially for the home gardener and lifestyle block owner based on the principles of Permaculture. Available for consultation on soil health, vegetable garden design, planting, pruning and permaculture design. Vital Harvest can create vegetable gardens from scratch, assist with a garden makeover or help design your food forest or permaculture landscape. Need help or advice contact Vital Harvest.

Incredible what can happen in 9 yrs! Feels good to look back at all we have achieved, especially when there is still plenty on the to do list.

10 yrs ago we bought a completely bare block of land.. around the same time Shane was completing a Permaculture Design Certificate.. the land became his project. With a design in place we got creating - Shane built the house, I established the gardens and together we planted A LOT of trees.

We are still working with that original design, but have ticked off a pond, farm fencing, irrigation, animal shelter, shelter belts, a wood lot, food forest, tunnel house and propagation shed, a huge edible garden, as well as countless other projects, big and small. We have beefies, a mob of Wiltshire sheep, Indian Runner Ducks and chooks.

Having that design in place gave us a vision for what this place could become. It helped us make decisions, work out what to do first, and slowly bring the pieces together rather than trying to do everything at once.

October is an exciting month in the garden, with spring in full swing and summer harvests on the horizon. There’s plenty of sowing and planting to do, but spring can still catch us unawares...

Vital Harvest goes on tour.. a chat on Permaculture with the Gore Garden Club in Bev Murray-Orr’s stunning Tuturau garden yesterday. We had a perfect window of weather before it slammed shut in the wind and turned decidedly chilly.

Bit of fun combining a few of my favourite things.. flowers, family and friends 🤗 However utterly envious of the peonies and trillium they grow down here in Southland AND the very doable price of pea straw!!

Thanks Bev & David for hosting us all 💗

Spring Workshop at the Falls Retreat today - oof it was a challenge talking into that wind at times, I am spent! I had a fab crew of new and experienced gardeners, loads of great questions. Thank you to those who travelled all the way from Te Kuiti, Whakatāne, Hamilton.. that means a lot. Happy growing!

It is THE most perfect pruning weather 🌞plus we are all good to go from a lunar perspective 🌖

I’ve been climbing apples and pear trees most of the week and in the last two days have done nearly 200 roses in this garden alone! My hands have seen better days 😬
