Over the years, we’ve naturally found the kind of work A Knight is best suited to. We like projects with a bit to work through. Architectural details that need resolving on site. Renovations where the existing house has a few unknowns. Builds where the architect, engineer and builder need to work closely to get the right result.

We’ve done enough of that work to be comfortable with the difficult parts of building. We’ll ask questions, offer a practical construction perspective and speak up when our experience tells us something needs another look.

If you’re planning that kind of build around Waihī Beach, talk to Hamish on 027 819 2801.

It’s a question we come back to a lot during a build. Not just whether something will work now, but whether it will still make sense once the house has been lived in for a few years.

How will the family use it? What’s likely to change? Is it going to make everyday life easier, or has it been chosen because it works right now?

You can’t predict everything that will happen over the life of a house, but you can think further ahead than handover.

Changes during a build aren’t unusual. If a client wants to change something, the first thing we’ll do is work out what’s involved.

Depending on where we’re at, something that sounds fairly simple might affect work that’s already been done, another trade or something that’s already been ordered.

Sometimes it’s an easy change. Other times we’ll say, yes, we can do it, but we don’t think it’s worth the extra cost or work involved. If we need the architect or engineer involved, we’ll bring them into the conversation too.

The client can still make the call. Our job is to make sure they know what that call actually means.

Weather is all part of building. You plan for it rather than hope it behaves.

Wrapping the scaffold gives the team a more protected environment to work in and helps reduce the amount of time lost to wind and rain.

It doesn’t mean the weather won’t affect the job, but it gives us more control over the conditions we’re working in.

One of the advantages of building in the same place for a long time is that you get to see your work again.

Sometimes it’s years later. A renovation, another job for the same client, or simply driving past a house we built a long time ago. And you notice things. What’s held up well. What we’d do differently now. Which products have proven themselves. How a house has changed as the people living in it have changed.

Building has changed a lot since Adam started A Knight, and we’ve changed with it. Some of that comes from new products, regulations and better ways of building. A lot of it comes from simply having done the work and being around long enough to learn from it.

If you’re planning a new build or renovation around Waihī Beach, talk to Hamish about what we can bring from the last 150+ projects to yours.

One of the misconceptions about building is that progress should always be easy to see.

Framing going up can change a house in a matter of days. Other stages involve just as much work, but there’s far less to show for it from the street.

Our Shaw rd renovation is currently scaffold wrapped, so most of what’s happening is hidden from view. There’s a lot of work happening in this stage. You just won’t see most of it until the wrap comes off.

Building has changed a lot over the years, and you have to keep learning with it. There are better products and better ways of doing certain things now than there were when we started.

We’re always interested in those. But we don’t use something just because it’s new.

We want to understand how it performs, whether it suits the house we’re building and what it’s going to mean for the owner in five, ten or twenty years.

If a newer product gives us a better result, we’ll use it. If we think something proven is still the better option, we’ll say that too.

Most people we build for aren’t builders. We don’t expect them to arrive knowing how everything works.

If you don’t understand why something is being done a certain way, why we’re recommending one option over another, or what you’re actually paying for, ask us.

We’d rather explain it properly than have someone nod along because they feel like they should already know. It’s your house and a significant amount of your money going into it. You should understand the decisions being made along the way.

If you’re considering a new build or renovation and have questions about where to start, Hamish is always happy to have a conversation.
