Lake Taupō Forest Trust The Trust now acts on behalf of more than 13,000 beneficial owners who retain their shares in the lands.

The Lake Taupō Forest Trust was established by Māori Land Court in 1968 to represent the interests of the owners of 68 separate Māori land titles on the eastern shores of Lake Taupō. The land blocks were originally leased to the Crown and planted in forest, with the stumpage shared between the Crown and the Trust at harvest. The Trust provides a range of grants and benefits to the owners and beneficiaries of the lands and more information can be found on our webpage: www.ltft.co.nz

🏫 INTRODUCING HE ĀWHINA – EARLY CHILDHOOD, KŌHANGA AND SCHOOL GRANTS

Applications now open!

He Āwhina provides $150 per applicant towards uniforms, stationery and school-related costs, from kōhanga reo and early childhood education through to secondary school (Years 0–13).

The grant is available to registered owners and their registered uri who are enrolled in kōhanga reo, early childhood education or school. This includes owners who have placed their shares into a Whānau Trust. Qualifying uri must have whakapapa to a current registered owner.

You have until 30 June 2027 to apply.

To apply, simply complete the online application form and attach a letter confirming enrolment and verified bank account details.

🌿 HE PŪTEA AROHA – TANGIHANGA GRANT NOW INCLUDES URI

We've extended our He Pūtea Aroha Tangihanga Grant to provide financial support towards tangihanga expenses for both registered owners and their registered uri.

Grant amounts available:

🌿 Registered Owners: $3,000 for those who passed away on or after 1 January 2026.

🌿 Uri/Descendants: $1,000 for eligible uri who passed away on or after 1 July 2026.

Eligibility for uri is based on whakapapa to a current owner of Lake Taupō Forest Trust.

Registration is required to be eligible for this grant. Please ensure your details are registered with Lake Taupō Forest Trust before applying.

We are pleased to introduce a new grant supporting eligible kōhanga reo across the Tūrangi and Taupō rohe.

Funding of up to $5,000 per kōhanga reo, per annum is available to support capital projects and improvements.

Kōaro Monitoring with Ihi Management 🐟

The team at Ihi Management were in Lake Taupō Forest yesterday, setting kōaro traps along the Waimarino Awa.

Kōaro are a small native fish, known for climbing waterfalls and wet rock to reach the upper stretches of our awa. They were once a staple kai for our people, but far fewer exist now. A big part of looking after them involves confirming the population's presence, size, condition and health, which is the purpose of this mahi.

The team is heading back in today to collect the traps. What they learn will feed into a kōaro wānanga planned for later on, and into how we all care for our native fish so they thrive.

📣 REGISTRATIONS ARE OPEN!

The wait is over! Registrations for the Lake Taupō Forest Trust Kaitiaki Whānau Weekend are officially open.

📍 Waitetoko Marae
🗓️ Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November

Here's what's on:
▸ Hunting & fishing: bring your own gear and head out with your whānau for one main catch each (deer, pig or trout), any time from Friday night to Sunday morning
▸ Pest control: bring your own gear and cull possums, rabbits, hares and catfish, a hands-on way to protect the taiao
▸ Obstacle course: Sunday, with age groups from 3–6 right up to 16–18
▸ Kaitiaki Passport: tamariki collect stamps for spotting rākau, rongoā, wildlife and more
▸ Taiao packs for every registered tamaiti, plus heaps of prizes up for grabs!

⚠️ Heading out hunting or fishing? You'll need a current fishing licence, and hunters must complete an on-site safety briefing. We'll send full details once you register.

Free entry for registered owners and their uri
Spots are limited: 50 tamariki (3–12), 50 rangatahi (12+) and whānau, so don't wait!

SAVE THE DATE: Lake Taupō Forest Trust Kaitiaki Whānau Weekend

Nau mai, haere mai! Bring the whole whānau to Waitetoko Marae from Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November 2026 for the Lake Taupō Forest Trust Kaitiaki Whānau Weekend.

This free weekend brings registered owners and their uri together for hunting, fishing, pest control, an obstacle course and a Kaitiaki Passport activity — with heaps of prizes up for grabs along the way!

Together, we'll nurture the kaitiaki of āpōpō. Our tamariki and rangatahi aged 3-18 will have fun, build confidence, and strengthen their connection to the whenua and wai, with their whānau right beside them.
