There’s something pretty special about pulling your first successful carrot harvest from the garden 🥕🌱
Carrots can be a little fussy about where they grow. They love being direct sown into loose, sandy soil so they have plenty of room to grow down & they don’t actually want heaps of nitrogen.
Too much nitrogen = lots of beautiful leafy tops… and not much happening underneath.
That’s why we’ve had success sowing ours into a bed that previously grew heavy feeders like tomatoes and brassicas. By the time the carrots went in, the soil had been depleted enough of nitrogen for them to thrive.
We’d tried interplanting carrots into our in-ground beds before, but the soil was just too hard for those little roots to push through. This time, the conditions were right and look at them! 🥕
We’re growing a hybrid variety this season, which means we won’t be saving seed from these ones, but we’re more than happy to enjoy the harvest and learn what works for our soil along the way.
