Some views never get old.

Standing on the deck of our East Takaka project, looking out across Golden Bay towards Takaka, it’s impossible not to pause and appreciate the privilege of building in a place like this.

Creating a home is always about more than the structure itself. It’s about shaping spaces that connect people to their surroundings — places where the changing light, weather, and landscape become part of everyday life.

To be entrusted with designing and building homes that sit so naturally within these environments is something we never take for granted.

A quiet moment on site, with timber stacked, tools nearby, and the bay stretching out beyond — a reminder of why thoughtful design and craftsmanship matter.

There’s something deeply satisfying about the final touches.

Isaac, one of the talented builders at Elemental Design and Build, completing the decking detail on our East Takaka project — a home carefully designed to sit within the landscape rather than compete against it.

From above, you can really see the relationship between the materials and the valley itself. The warmth of the timber stain mirrors the surrounding tones of the Takaka Valley, creating a natural transition between land and architecture. With the house resting in shadow and the deck illuminated by late sunlight, the craftsmanship and texture of the timber truly come alive.

It’s this level of attention to detail that defines how we work at Elemental. Every line, finish, junction, and material choice is considered not only for function and longevity, but for how the home feels within its environment.

A home should belong to the landscape.

Built with care. Designed with intention.

There’s a unique relationship that forms between a builder and a home over the course of a project.

What begins as piles in the ground and a bare frame slowly evolves month by month into something with character, warmth, and life. You watch every stage take shape — the roofline, the decking, the garage, the solar installation — until eventually the vision that once only existed on paper becomes a real place where memories will be made for years to come.

Seeing this East Takaka build from above really puts that journey into perspective. From structure to shelter, from concept to completion, every detail tells part of the story.

At Elemental Design & Build, we take pride not only in the finished product, but in the entire process of bringing a home to life alongside our clients. There’s something deeply rewarding about standing back in the final months of a build and seeing how far it has come.

The difference between a good build and a truly exceptional one often comes down to the details.

In this ceiling, it’s the clean timber grain, the precision of every line, and the subtle black shadowline detail between each board that completely transforms the space. It’s not simply about installing materials — it’s about creating depth, contrast, warmth, and a feeling that immediately catches your eye the moment you walk into the room.

At Elemental Design & Build, attention to detail is everything. Every finish, every junction, every texture and tone is carefully considered to ensure the final result feels cohesive, refined, and true to the vision of the home.

Because great design isn’t only seen in the big picture — it’s found in the finer details that make a space truly stand out.

There’s something special about this stage of a build.

The paint tins are still on the floor, tools are still scattered about, and the finishing touches are still coming together — but the vision is already alive. Through the windows and doors, the Takaka Valley opens up in all its beauty, filling the home with light, colour, and a sense of calm that’s impossible to fake.

At Elemental Design & Build, every project is about more than just constructing a house. It’s about working closely with our clients to create spaces that truly feel like home — spaces that reflect the lifestyle they want to live, the views they want to wake up to, and the atmosphere they want to come home to every day.

From the first conversations through to the final details, collaboration and client satisfaction remain at the centre of everything we do. Seeing these ideas take shape is one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.

This East Takaka build is coming together beautifully, and we’re excited for what’s next.

A special moment captured from the traditional timber framing workshop recently held in Onekaka.

It was an honour to witness the meeting of minds and hands between Benito Stein of the Canelo Project and Graeme Scott of Elemental Design & Build, bringing together a wealth of knowledge, craftsmanship, and deep respect for the timeless art of timber framing.

Through shared skills, stories, and practical hands-on learning, this workshop celebrated the enduring beauty of building with wood in its most honest and traditional form. A true exchange of craft, culture, and connection.

This image is but a taste of the moments captured on camera throughout the workshop — a precursor to a reel-length documentary video soon to be released, sharing more of the process, the people, and the spirit of the gathering.

Grateful to everyone who helped make this experience possible, and to these two master craftspeople for keeping these traditions alive.

Not all wall linings are created equal.

When building a home, choosing the right GIB board for the right application is a crucial part of creating a space that is durable, safe, and built to stand the test of time. From standard linings for everyday living spaces, to moisture-resistant boards for bathrooms and laundries, and fire-rated systems where protection matters most — every material has a purpose.

At Elemental Design & Build, we believe thoughtful building starts with understanding the role each component plays within the home. The materials hidden behind the finished surface are just as important as what you see on the outside.

Using specific GIB board for specific uses helps improve longevity, performance, comfort, and compliance — ensuring every room is fit for purpose and every build is approached with intention.
It’s the attention to these details that transforms a house into a well-crafted home.

There’s something timeless about a traditional timber frame.

At Elemental Design & Build, we’re deeply passionate about crafting timber frames that honour centuries-old building traditions while creating warm, enduring homes for modern living. Each beam is carefully selected, each joint thoughtfully cut, and every frame raised with the kind of attention to detail that only true craftsmanship allows.

Traditional timber framing is more than a building method — it’s an art. Strong wooden joinery, natural materials, and structures designed to last for generations.

For us, the beauty lies not only in the finished form, but in the process itself: working closely with our clients, shaping each piece by hand, and watching a frame come together beam by beam.

The result is a home with character, strength, and soul — a place that truly feels alive.

If you’re dreaming of a home built with natural materials and timeless craft, we’d love to talk about bringing a traditional timber frame to life with you.

There’s something powerful about raising a structure by hand.

This aerial shot captures one of our Traditional Timber Frame Workshops here in Aotearoa, delivered in collaboration with the incredible team from The Canelo Project. Over several days, participants stepped into the craft — learning to measure, cut, chisel and raise a timber frame using time-honoured techniques that have sheltered communities for generations.

No power tools. No shortcuts. Just skill, patience, and people working together with intention.

These workshops are about more than building structures. They’re about reconnecting with materials, reviving traditional knowledge, and remembering what it feels like to create something enduring with your own hands.

At Elemental Design & Build, we believe in architecture that honours natural materials, ethical processes, and community collaboration. Timber framing embodies all of that — strength, beauty, and integrity woven into every joint.

If you feel called to learn traditional building skills and be part of a hands-on, heart-led experience, keep an eye on our page for upcoming workshop announcements.

Build slow. Build well. Build together.
