🏗️ Precast vs Prestressed Concrete – What's the Difference?

These terms are often used interchangeably, but they serve different purposes and understanding the difference can help ensure the right product is used for the right application.

▪️ Precast Concrete
Precast concrete refers to concrete elements that are manufactured in a controlled factory environment before being transported to site for installation. This process provides superior quality control, consistency, and efficiency compared to traditional in-situ concrete construction.

Common precast products include:
- Retaining walls
- Reservoir panels
- Culverts
- Building panels

▪️ Prestressed Concrete
Prestressed concrete is a specialised type of precast concrete that contains high-strength steel strands tensioned before/during the casting process. This introduces compression into the concrete, allowing it to carry greater loads over longer spans while reducing cracking and deflection.

Common prestressed products include:
- Bridge beams
- Unispan Floors (Ribs) and flat slabs
- Structural beams

What's the key difference?
All prestressed concrete is precast, but not all precast concrete is prestressed. Prestressing enhances the structural performance of the concrete, making it ideal for applications where strength, durability, and longer spans are required.

🚧 Exciting News from Specialised Concrete Products! 🚧

We're proud to be playing a key role in the construction of the new Mainfreight facility in Nelson, with the first of our precast concrete panels successfully installed yesterday! 👏

This significant project will see us manufacture and supply 134 precast concrete panels, these panels include exposed concrete features and architectual details.

While our dedicated team at Specialised Concrete Products works hard behind the scenes to ensure every panel meets the highest standards of quality, the team at Lift N Shift Ltd is expertly transporting and standing approx. 700T of panels on site.

Seeing the first retaining panels in place is an exciting milestone, and we're looking forward to watching the building take shape as more panels are installed over the coming weeks.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in this project. It's a fantastic example of local expertise, teamwork, and precision working together to achieve great results. 💪🏗️
