❓WHY WE DID IT THIS WAY 🔥

At House of Illusions, we wanted the experience to start from the moment you open the front door.

The double-sided fireplace is positioned directly in your sightline as you enter. That first glimpse of the fire creates an unexpected moment of warmth and draws you further into the home.

But its position is about more than first impressions.

Sitting between the living and dining areas, the fireplace brings warmth and atmosphere to both spaces. Even from the kitchen, the fire remains within view, helping create that cosy, connected feeling across the heart of the home.

It’s one feature doing several jobs — creating an arrival moment, connecting spaces and bringing warmth into everyday family life.

That’s why we did it this way.

TOGETHER, BUT WITH SPACE OF YOUR OWN 🏡

Last week, we talked about some of the principles behind designing a multigenerational home. Now we’re taking you inside a real Maddren project to show how those ideas were applied.

One of the most important considerations was getting the balance between togetherness and privacy right.

In this home, the separate living area is positioned just behind the main kitchen, with a door that can be fully closed to give each generation their own private space.

But when it’s time to come together, the connection is easy. Family members can simply step through and join everyone for dinner or spend time in the shared living areas, without having to pass through the other family’s private spaces.

It’s a relatively simple design decision, but an important one.

Good multigenerational design isn’t just about creating separate areas. It’s about thinking carefully about how those areas connect, how people move between them, and making both privacy and togetherness feel natural.

Over the next few posts, we’ll share more of the thinking behind this multigenerational Maddren home.

Set in the beautiful Te Arai this modern, contemporary home is in the running for the Resene New Home $2-$4 Million category for the regional Master Builders House of the year awards.

It boasts stunning views framed in modern architectural design, with strong lines and a seamless indoor outdoor flow, this home has it all.

Masterfully built by NF Construction , we really enjoyed working with them on this project.

We’re proud of this home and looking forward to the awards
