Revisiting St. John’s Church.

St. John’s was designed to feel open, warm and welcoming. Not just as a place of worship, but as a space where the wider community can gather, connect and feel at home.

The design moves away from the traditional barriers often associated with church buildings, replacing grand entrances, dark foyers and imposing façades with light-filled spaces, clear connections and a more approachable scale. Red brick provides a link to the original building, while helping the church sit comfortably within its residential neighbourhood.

Today, St. John’s shows how a thoughtfully crafted building can be both spiritually meaningful and practical, serving the church and wider community now and well into the future — a true community hub.

Victoria Street Apartments is now complete, bringing 36 new homes across three residential blocks, just a short walk from Rotorua’s CBD, schools, shops, transport, and everyday essentials.

With accessible ground-floor homes, bike storage, a shared playground, and warm terracotta and ochre screening inspired by Rotorua’s streetscape, the development has been designed to feel connected, practical, and easy to live in.

A great example of social housing that supports everyday living, fostering a sense of belonging and community.

Schools are some of our favourite projects to work on, because they are never just about buildings, they are about people, community, and creating places where tamariki can feel safe, inspired and connected.

At Mangapapa School, DCA has been part of a major campus rebuild, creating a safer, more connected and future-focused learning environment.

We are delighted to have The Chodge featured in the new Cape to Bluff Volume 2. A stunning architectural photography book by world-renowned photographer Simon Devitt and writer Andrea Stevens.

Traversing Aotearoa New Zealand, the book composes a unique portrait of residential architecture from north to south. At its heart is a strong sense of place, exploring 30 exceptional homes that respond to the land — its forms, its climate, and its people.

It is a privilege to see The Chodge included among such a remarkable collection of homes and architectural stories.

Work is well underway on Hamilton Girls’ High School’s new Performance Health and Wellness Centre, with Hawkins leading the build.

Designed by DCA, the Centre will provide flexible, high-performing spaces for sport, training, learning and connection.

It’s exciting to see the project taking shape on site, and we’re looking forward to watching it become a vibrant hub for students, staff and the wider school community.
