What My Old Boots Taught Me About Looking After a House
A few years ago, I owned a pair of high quality RM Williams boots that I absolutely loved.
They'd been everywhere with me. Through countless site visits, long days on my feet, and plenty of miles in between. Like many owners, I'd always heard about RM Williams' famous repair service. The idea was simple: when they eventually wore out, you sent them back, and they'd give them a new lease on life.
So that's exactly what I did.
Except they came back with disappointing news.
The boots couldn't be repaired. The reason wasn't simply their age—it was that there was no evidence they'd been properly maintained throughout their life with RM Williams’ approved products. The leather had dried out and deteriorated beyond what a rebuild could reasonably restore. I had assumed their quality alone would see them through, but quality only goes so far if it's not looked after.
I have to admit, it was a lesson that stuck with me.
The more I thought about it, the more I realised houses are no different.
As a property maintenance professional at Oncore Wellington, I walk through homes every week where owners are facing repair bills that could have been avoided. A blocked gutter leads to overflowing water. Overflowing water causes timber decay. A small roof leak becomes damaged insulation, stained ceilings and expensive repairs. Cracked sealant around a shower quietly allows moisture into wall cavities for years before anyone notices.
Rarely do these problems appear overnight.
They almost always start as small maintenance jobs that were easy to fix but easy to ignore.
That's why I often tell homeowners that maintaining a house is a lot like maintaining a quality pair of boots. You don't wait until they're falling apart before you care for them. You clean them, condition them and protect them regularly so they continue to do the job they were built for.
Your home deserves the same attention.
The challenge for many homeowners isn't knowing that maintenance is important—it's finding the time, the right tradespeople, or even knowing where to start. That's where having a trusted team makes all the difference.
At Oncore Wellington, we take the stress out of property maintenance by offering a comprehensive range of services designed to keep your home in top condition all year round. Whether it's gutter cleaning, exterior washing, roof maintenance, minor repairs, painting, deck and fence maintenance, building repairs, or organising specialist trades when needed, we can help protect your biggest investment before small issues become costly ones.
Rather than scrambling to find someone after a problem appears, our clients have the reassurance of knowing there's one company they can call to coordinate almost every aspect of maintaining their property.
Regular maintenance isn't an expense—it's an investment in preserving your home's value, comfort and longevity.
I still wish I'd looked after those RM Williams boots a little better. A bit of leather conditioner and regular care could have saved them from an early retirement.
Fortunately, the lesson they taught me has proven far more valuable than the boots themselves.
A home, just like a quality pair of boots, will reward you for looking after it. Neglect it, and eventually there comes a point where even the best craftsmanship can't be restored.
If you're not sure where to begin, that's exactly what Oncore Wellington is here for. We can help you develop a practical maintenance plan, carry out routine upkeep, and deal with minor issues before they become major problems. Because when it comes to protecting your home, prevention will almost always cost less than repair—and regular care is what keeps a well-built house performing at its best for decades to come.
