A toilet seems like one of the easier bathroom choices, until you start comparing the options.

Back-to-wall, wall-hung, concealed cistern, smart toilets, different trap types, different installation costs. There is more to consider than simply choosing the one that looks best.

Our new guide breaks down the main types of toilets available in New Zealand, including the pros, cons and costs to think about before buying.

This was the starting point for our St. Heliers renovation.

James walks through the home at the beginning of the project and shows what we were working with before the changes began. Tomorrow, we’re sharing more of the story, including why the homeowners decided to renovate and the thinking behind the finished result.

Stay tuned for the next part.

They weren’t renovating because they wanted a different house. They wanted the home they already loved to work better for the life they were coming back to.

For this St Heliers renovation, that meant opening up the living areas for bigger family gatherings, creating a comfortable downstairs master suite and making practical changes that would still make sense as the owners got older.

The full story looks at how those decisions came together over a 10-week renovation.

Before the Hollywood Avenue villa reached the finished result we shared last week, the renovation was only just getting started.

James takes us back to the early stages of this Epsom project, when much of the work was still ahead and the home looked very different from the finished version.

Seeing where the renovation began makes the final result even more satisfying.

What does it actually take to renovate a 100-year-old Auckland villa without losing what made it worth keeping in the first place?

Our Hollywood Avenue, Epsom article looks beyond the finished rooms and into the decisions behind the renovation, what needed to change, what was worth working with and how the home was updated as a whole.

If you enjoyed the video last week, this goes deeper into the story behind the project.

Would you choose a shower over the bath or keep them completely separate?

James walks through this bathroom and shows how the bath, 10mm glass screen and altered windows work together. The lower section of the original windows was closed in for a more practical shower area, while the upper windows were kept to bring natural light into the room.

This room didn’t need its personality stripped out. It just needed a proper refresh.

James walks through how the hallway and living room were updated with fresh walls, new carpet, lighting and work around the fireplace, while keeping the darker timber details that already belonged to the home.

The result feels much brighter without pretending the original house was never there.

Two freestanding cabinets out, one much better storage solution in. 👌

James shows how this bedroom went from separate pieces of furniture to a custom-built unit running along the wall, giving the room a cleaner look and far more useful storage. The old cabinets didn’t go to waste either, they were donated.

Sometimes a bathroom doesn’t need a straight swap, it needs a rethink.

James walks through this renovation and shows how the old bath and vanity layout was reorganised to make better use of the room. The finished space now feels cleaner, more considered and much more current.

Have a look at the before shots, then see how the new layout came together.

A pantry you actually want to open. 😄

James takes a closer look at some of the kitchen storage details in this renovation, including the lighting, pull-out shelving and soft-close cabinetry.

They’re small choices, but they make a big difference once you’re using the kitchen every day.
