🏑 Meet Toka Nelson, Senior Installer at Continuous Group Wellington.

Toka has been part of the Wellington team since 2017 and in that time has become one of our most trusted specialists when it comes to getting the details right. Precision fascia work, spouting, downpipes and complex internal gutter conversions... Toka has done it all and then some.

Eight years on the tools in Wellington means he has seen every roofline challenge the region can throw at a team.

Off the tools you will find Toka out in the great outdoors and on game days backing the Wahs every chance he gets. πŸ‰

Toka's tip for anyone thinking about new spouting:

πŸ’¬ "When replacing your old gutters, upgrade your downpipes at the exact same time. It fully modernises the look of your home, finishes off the aesthetic and maximises your overall investment."

Solid advice from someone who has seen the difference it makes firsthand.

❄️ This winter has been brutal across New Zealand.

The southerlies have been relentless and temperatures have dropped lower than most of us have seen in years. Right now, your spouting is under more stress than at any other time.

⚠️ 3 WARNING SIGNS YOUR SPOUTING NEEDS ATTENTION THIS WINTER:

🌧️ 1. Overflow during heavy rain or snowmelt
This winter's intense southerlies and sudden temperature swings mean water is hitting your spouting harder and faster than usual. If it is overflowing, your foundations and landscaping are taking the hit right now.

🟠 2. Rust, peeling paint or cracks appearing along spouting edges
Extreme freeze and thaw cycles accelerate metal failure faster than normal NZ winters. What was a small rust spot in autumn can spread rapidly in conditions like these. Do not ignore it.

πŸ’§ 3. Moss, stains or damp patches on your fascia or cladding
With this much sustained cold and moisture, water is finding every weakness. If you are seeing staining or damp patches, structural timber damage is already underway.

πŸ›‘οΈ This is exactly why our MAG-200 continuous system was built for NZ conditions:

βœ… 33% more protection than standard spouting
βœ… Self-healing cut-edge technology
βœ… No joins, no weak points
βœ… 15-year material guarantee

🎁 And right now, every new residential rainwater system installation comes with a FREE Flowmate Leaf Protection System on downpipes installed β€” valued at up to $550, at no cost to you. T&Cs apply.

πŸ’§This is one of the most common questions we hear β€” and blocked spouting is actually not always the answer.

A lot of homeowners clean their gutters, find nothing obvious and assume the problem is solved. Then the next downpour arrives and the overflow is back.

If spouting still overflows after it has been cleaned out, here are a few possibilities:

Your spouting is undersized for your roof.

Older NZ homes were often fitted with spouting sized for the rainfall of decades ago. This winter's intense southerlies and heavy rain events are overwhelming systems that were already marginal. More water, same pipes, not enough capacity.

Your downpipes are in the wrong position.

A down pipe placed too far from a valley or a change in roof pitch means water is travelling too far along the spouting before it can exit. It backs up and overflows at the weakest point before it ever reaches the down pipe.

Water is getting behind the spouting instead of into it.

A failed back flashing or a join that has separated means water bypasses the spouting entirely, running down your exterior wall and behind your cladding. It looks like overflow but the spouting is not actually receiving the water at all.

All of these are fixable but the longer they are left the bigger and more expensive the repair becomes.

LIMITED TIME OFFER: Every new residential Continuous Group rainwater system comes with a free Flowmate Leaf Protection System on downpipes installed valued at up to $550, at no cost to you. If your spouting needs replacing, there has never been a better time to sort it.

πŸ”§ Here is how we think about it:

Repair makes sense when: The problem is genuinely isolated to one section or join. The rest of the system is in good condition β€” no sag, no rust, brackets are holding. The spouting is less than 10 to 15 years old.

Replacement makes more sense when: There are multiple failure points appearing across the system. The spouting is sagging in sections, which means the brackets could be failing, not just the joins. Rust is spreading from cut edges. The fascia behind has started absorbing moisture. The system is 15 years or older and patching it is becoming a cycle rather than a solution.

The honest truth is that a repair on a failing system buys time, but not much. Most homeowners who patch and repair end up replacing within a year or two anyway, having spent money twice.

We will always give you a straight assessment. If a repair is genuinely the right answer, we will tell you. If it is not, we will tell you that too.

🏑 Meet Mike Hillyard, part of the Continuous Group Auckland team.

Mike's journey with Continuous Group began in 2004, contracting under Fraser before stepping out on his own in 2006 with his wife Deanna assisting him onsite, when not studying and raising their family.

Over two decades he has installed every spouting profile, down pipe and fascia product imaginable across Auckland. He built a reputation for quality work and genuine expertise along the way.

The highlight of his installation career? A solo 17 metre run that those who know, know. To put that in context, a length that size typically needs at least two people to handle. Mike did it alone with ease because he is genuinely just that good!

In 2022 Mike made the move off the tools and into the sales team. Honestly, Auckland customers are better for it. Twenty years of hands-on installation experience now goes directly into every conversation he has with homeowners, builders and developers about what their project actually needs.

Oh, and he still prides himself on being a world class trailer reverser and forklift operator. Some skills stay with you. πŸ˜„

If you are in Auckland and want honest advice from someone who has genuinely done it all, Mike is your person.

πŸ‘‡ Based in Auckland and need spouting, fascia or downpipes sorted? Mike and the team would love to help. Call or click the link in bio for your free quote.
