Turns out installing solar involves a little more than just putting panels on the roof ☀️⚡️
Before the batteries, inverter and gateway can go in, they need a suitable home - so naturally we decided to spend our weekend building one ourselves.
Electrical work, building, sewing… apparently the transferable skills are endless
One weekend down. About halfway there.

Palmerston North possibly has the coolest library in the world 🤩

Blueprint: The City Library Makerspace Palmerston North City Council is an absolute treasure. 3D printers, laser cutters, woodworking equipment, sewing and interlockers, it's the best. I would have given everything to have this when I was growing up.

I’m using it to finally create the core values sign I’ve been talking about for over a year, made from a beautiful old rimu TV cabinet that would otherwise have continued to collect dust it a garage.

But the best part is seeing how much it inspires my daughter. Every time we leave, she asks when we can go back and tells me the place feels like it was made for her.

This is what sparking an interest in young people looks like 👏

Behind the scenes - when we service ovens, we get to the parts that users can’t. That’s why regular servicing is so important. It’s much safer and more cost-effective than having to replace an entire fan motor if it seizes up or breaks due to build up

Why should everyday New Zealanders care whether electricians know how to teach? ⚡️

Because being great at your trade doesn't automatically make you great at passing that knowledge on.

If we don't teach our experienced tradespeople how to teach, we make it harder to develop the next generation of skilled electricians.

Fewer well-trained electricians means a tighter supply of skilled tradespeople and when supply can't keep up with demand, the cost of electrical services will continue to rise.

Training apprentices isn't just an industry issue. It affects all of us.

We talk about why manuals and manufacturer information are so important for electricians, and how learning to properly design electrical systems is a big part of an electrical apprenticeship.

Caravan Power Upgrade – Part 3 ⚡
Now we’re looking at how the new batteries will be charged.
The upgraded setup gives them three ways to charge — mains power, solar, and from the tow vehicle while travelling — with the new chargers also allowing for faster, more efficient charging.
More flexibility, faster charging and better use of the power available.

Caravan Power Upgrade – Part 2 ⚡
This time we’re looking at the batteries. We’re upgrading the existing setup to a larger lithium battery, giving them more usable power and better storage capacity.
We’re also relocating the battery from under the bed to ensure the new installation meets the requirements for lithium batteries in caravans.
Next up, we’ll keep working through the new power setup and how it all comes together.

A cool little project we’ve got underway - upgrading a caravan with a new lithium battery and multiple ways to keep it charged: solar, the tow vehicle, and mains power.
We thought people might be interested in what goes into a setup like this, so we’ll share a few videos as we work through the project.
