🪧: Another new sign going up at Otematata

Thanks to Specialised Services Group LTD and Chris Manson for his photography work this week. Getting the old signs down, posts painted and new signs up next to State Highways and local roads is a job that is best done without a Council photographer getting in the way.

🪧: Long-awaited new signs set to dress up Waitaki’s townships

A long-awaited transformation is under way at the gateways to Waitaki’s townships, with striking new entry signs dressing up the district and creating a strong first impression for residents and visitors alike.

Herbert and Waianakarua are leading the way, becoming the first communities to welcome the new signs as Specialised Services Group LTD began installation this week.

Over the next few weeks their hard-working team will be travelling around the district to remove the faded printed township signs, and the Waitaki District entry signs, and replace them with the new Corten steel and powdered aluminium ones, fabricated by Oamaru firm AcuCut.

Mayor Mel Tavendale celebrated the new signage, “With growing interest in Waitaki thanks to East of Eden and the Lonely Planet 2027 feature – we'll be able to welcome tourists in this summer with a significant upgrade to the signs at Waitaki’s borders and many of our beautiful townships.”

Chief Executive Alex Parmley was pleased with the news, “Delivering this project with communities' ideas and feedback, and having the design, fabrication and installation all done by local designers and businesses makes these signs a real partnership between Council and the community – and something we can all be proud of as we travel around the Waitaki District.”

Council’s thanks go to Specialised Services Group for their work installing the new signage, AcuCut for their beautiful design and fabrication work and the project team who have delivered the signage within the budget set by Council. Special thanks of course go to the community who provided wonderful ideas and feedback for and about the designs.

Proud to be getting these installed around the region!

SSG reached a significant milestone this week with the successful removal of the final bridge span on the Kakanui River Deconstruction Project.

The team also opened the river mouth this week, resulting in lower river levels and allowing access to the lower cross braces that were previously submerged. This will assist with completing the remaining deconstruction works safely and efficiently. The improved flow through the river mouth is also expected to be beneficial heading into the upcoming whitebait season, helping to restore natural river conditions and improve fish passage between the river and the sea.

A huge thank you to the Kakanui community for the support we've received throughout the project. From the friendly waves and conversations, to the many people who have stopped to watch the works, and of course the extremely yummy morning teas, you've made us feel genuinely welcome.
