RSK expands New Zealand water, energy and infrastructure capability as BTW Company joins group.

BTW Managing Director Grant Aitken, who will continue to lead the business, said: “Joining RSK gives BTW the scale, technical depth and international network to support the next stage of our growth while maintaining the local relationships, regional presence and knowledge and values that have shaped the business for more than 50 years. A thought-provoking week at NZ Geothermal Week 2026, with plenty of constructive conversation, learning and connection across the sector.

BTW was proud to support the Partnering with Māori for Geothermal Growth session, and to be part of a wider week of discussion about the opportunities, challenges and partnerships shaping New Zealand’s geothermal and energy future.

Thank you to the speakers, organisers and everyone who shared their knowledge and perspectives throughout the week, and to Taupō for hosting and welcoming the geothermal community.

A large share of New Zealand’s renewable energy development pipeline is concentrated in the North Island, where demand, generation opportunity, infrastructure, and land use pressures all intersect. For energy developers, that makes local knowledge and technical coordination critical. BTW has teams in five North Island locations, supporting projects with expertise and integrated service provision – one project, one connected team.

A current renewable energy project that BTW has supported is Te Rahui Solar Farm – a 400 MW solar farm under construction at Rangitāiki near Taupō, jointly developed by Nova Energy and Meridian Energy, and expected to generate enough renewable electricity to power around 100,000 homes annually.

It has been a busy start to 2026, with our Ecology Team supporting freshwater ecology projects across Aotearoa.

This year, our team has:
- Undertaken freshwater fish salvage and relocation across multiple projects to minimise the effects of in-stream works and habitat modification.
- Responded quickly to several projects through our nationwide permit, enabling environmental requirements to be met within tight timeframes.
- Worked alongside hapū across the North Island to support knowledge sharing and training in the safe handling of taonga freshwater species.
- Encountered Threatened and At-Risk species at several project sites, providing valuable insights into the health of local freshwater ecosystems.
- Recorded some exceptional native freshwater fauna, including longfin and shortfin tuna, a variety galaxiid species (commonly known as whitebait in their juvenile form), kākahi (freshwater mussel), common and redfin bullies, and kōura.

All these encounters and salvages have been undertaken in accordance with our permits and associated conditions.

Ngā mihi nui to the communities, hapū, clients and project partners who helped make this meaningful mahi possible. We look forward to continuing this important work throughout the 2026/27 season.

New Zealand’s geothermal sector is entering an important period of growth.
The Government’s March 2026 strategy, From the Ground Up, sets an ambition to double geothermal energy use by 2040 and recognises the role geothermal can play in electricity generation, industrial heat, regional economies and long term energy resilience.

For project owners and partners, this growth will require strong technical coordination across land, infrastructure, consenting, environmental effects, cultural considerations, engineering, surveying and project delivery. BTW brings these disciplines together through one connected team.

As New Zealand Geothermal Week approaches in Taupō this August, we welcome conversations with developers, generators, investors, asset owners and partners looking at the next stage of geothermal and renewable energy development.

Mānawatia a Matariki – A fantastic opportunity to connect across our offices this week as teams came together to share a Matariki lunch. A significant milestone for Ngāmotu Marae – BTW is delighted to see the Government’s commitment of just over $8.5 million towards the development of Ngāmotu Marae.

Through our strong working relationship with Ngāti Te Whiti and project partners, we have seen the vision, commitment and years of mahi behind this kaupapa. This funding is an important milestone that will help Ngāmotu Marae move forward and become a cultural home for the hapū, as well as a place of connection, learning and growth for the wider community.

We congratulate Ngāti Te Whiti and everyone who has worked to bring this long-held vision closer to reality.
