It's not simply a drawing showing where to put cones.

Good traffic management planning starts by understanding the work, the environment and the risks, then determining the controls needed to manage those risks.

Sometimes you drive through a work zone and wonder why traffic management is still in place when there doesn't seem to be anyone working.

SH6 WAI-ITI, TASMAN – ROAD REBUILD

Plan ahead for STOP/GOs between Hoult Valley Rd West and Trass Valley Rd starting from Monday 12 October to Friday 20 November, 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Expect delays of up to 15 minutes and adhere to the temporary speed limit which will remain in place for the duration of the work.

No work will take place over public holiday long weekend periods.

During work hours the section of the Great Taste Trail shared path that runs alongside the worksite will also be closed. This means cyclists will need to ‘claim the lane’ riding in the middle of the lane before returning to the cycle lanes once they exit the site. The Great Taste Trail shared path will reopen outside of work hours.

Planning work near a road?

One of the first questions to ask is what traffic management will be needed.

The answer depends on what you're doing, where the work is taking place and how it affects vehicles, pedestrians and other road users.

You might need measures such as temporary signs, cones, stop/go control, portable traffic lights, a temporary speed limit, pedestrian management or a more complex traffic management setup.

The important thing is to consider the risks before work starts and make sure the right controls are in place.

Our summer maintenance season is underway in Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough.

This year our programme will renew just over 100 lane kms of state highways across the top of the south region resulting in safer, smoother journeys. Most of the work will be done under stop/go traffic management, with some night time closures required to minimise disruption.

This includes road rebuilding, resurfacing - removing the top layer of road and replacing it with a new, pre-mixed layer of stone, bitumen, and other materials; and resealing which involves spraying a layer of hot bitumen or emulsion onto the road, before spreading stone chips over it. These chips take time to settle into the surface, and any loose ones are swept away a few days later. This work has to be done when the weather is warm and dry.

In Tasman you’ll see maintenance work on SH6 Wai-iti, SH6 Wakefield, SH6/SH60 near Three Brothers roundabout, SH65 Shenandoah, SH60 Puramahoi and SH60 Tākaka Hill.

We’ll also resume proactive resilience work on SH6 at Granity Narrows on Monday 5 October after pausing over winter due to wet ground conditions. Resilience work is also planned on SH6 Hope Saddle in early 2027.

In Nelson recovery work on SH6 Rocks Road is on track for completion in November. In February we’ll carry out work on SH6 Whangamoa Saddle.

In Marlborough you’ll see maintenance work on SH1 Weld Pass, SH1 near Riverlands, SH1 Grove Road, SH63 near Lake Argyle, SH63 near Delta Lakes Heights, SH6 in Havelock and SH6 near Pelorus Bridge.

SH6 Wakefield
Road stabilisation work continues south of Wakefield, near Baigent Valley Road, until Friday 9 October between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday. Stop/go traffic management and a temporary 30km/h speed limit is in place during work hours. Expect minor delays.

SH60 between Redwood Road (outside O’Connors Creek Pump Station) and Maisey Road
Monday 5 October to Friday 16 October, stop/go traffic management will be in place Mondays to Fridays, between 9am and 4pm, on SH60 outside O'Connors Creek Pump Station, as part of Tasman District Council's Redwood Valley Water Upgrade project. Expect minor delays.

SH60 Coastal Highway near Harley Road
Barrier repair work will take place overnight from 8pm Sunday 4 October to 6am Monday 5 October. During this time traffic will be stopped in both directions for up to 15 minutes. A temporary speed limit of 30km/h will be in place through the work site.

Today (1 October 2026) 4 new road rules have become law. Here's what they are:

The aim of the new rules is to make people’s travel safer and better reflect how people already use the roads. From today 1 October:

• Kids 12-years-old and younger can now ride their bikes on the footpath. Parents and caregivers are now also allowed to ride with them. Keep an eye out for kids on bikes when entering or leaving driveways.

• You’ll now be able to ride your e-scooter in cycle lanes. This’ll mean e-scooter riders can get to where they’re going more efficiently. The speed limit still applies to e-scooters, and we highly recommend that you wear a helmet when riding.

• There’s now a minimum passing gap of 1.5m when passing people riding bikes, horses or e-scooters that are travelling in your lane and heading in the same direction as you. This only applies to people driving motor vehicles or riding motorbikes. The 1.5m passing gap doesn’t apply to parked cars or people that are travelling in a different lane to you. If it’s not safe to pass, then you’ll need to wait and pass when it’s safe.

• Everyone is now required to give way to buses that are signalling that they’re leaving bus stops, the roadside or bus lanes on roads that’re 60km/h or less. This new rule allows for buses to safely re-enter traffic.

Earlier this year we asked for your feedback on these changes. We passed your feedback onto the Minister of Transport – there was broad support for the changes the Government proposed, and the Minister decided on the above.
