Horoirangi Ki te Hoe! 🌅

Today marked a significant milestone in a journey of nearly three years—from the inception to the unveiling this morning by Ngāti Tama whānau of a powerful expression of our cultural values embedded within the landscape through art. 👍

This journey began during the iwi engagement phases of the Glenduan Wetland Restoration Project, a community landscape initiative led by Nelson City Council to transform low-lying, flood-prone, previously grazed land at Glenduan Reserve (The Glen) into a functioning wetland. 🌱

Our cultural values hold importance across all levels of society and are deeply connected to our relationships with land, water, people, and place. The 5-metre corten steel sculpture, designed in the form of a hoe (paddle), represents the integral journeys of the past, present, and future. 👏

Designed by Maiorere Wanoa-Sundgren, the sculpture creates a meaningful connection between Ngāti Tama and this place, while also offering a sense of identity, connection, and belonging for local residents and the wider Nelson community. 🫶

It is a powerful example of how cultural values, art, landscape, and community can come together to create something enduring for generations to come. 🤝

This is a strategic, community-focused role that will build participation, strengthen cultural connections, and translate vision into programmes and initiatives that make a lasting difference for whānau.

Ngāti Tama is looking forward to welcoming our whānau back to Whakatū for another weekend of whakawhanaungatanga, connection and kaupapa.😍

Save these dates - Friday 4 December to Sunday 6 December 2026 and get ready for a weekend full of connection and activities ending with our AGM on Sunday at Whakatū Marae.

Accommodation will be available at Whakatū Marae for whānau travelling to attend the weekend. Spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first-in, first-served basis, so please register early.

CAWTHRON SUMMER SCHOLARSHIP -

Are you a Māori undergraduate student interested in freshwater ecology, wetland restoration or native fish?

Cawthron Institute, in partnership with Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga, is offering a summer scholarship for a student to gain hands-on experience working alongside scientists on a real-world research project across Te Tauihu. The project will involve visiting local wetlands, collecting samples, identifying aquatic invertebrates, preparing samples for laboratory analysis and analysing research data. This is a fantastic opportunity to strengthen your research skills, contribute to kaupapa supporting freshwater restoration and native fish conservation, and experience what it is like to work as a professional scientist!

🌿Based in Nelson from mid-November 2026 for 10 weeks
🌿$7,500 scholarship
🌿Open to Māori undergraduate students
🌿 Practical field, laboratory and research experience
