The first of seven prefabricated modules for the Interim Inpatient Unit was lifted into place at 3:30am this morning at Nelson Hospital and another will be transported and lifted into place each night over the next week. The first lift was delayed a day due to the high winds on Monday.

This new inpatient unit will be completed this year providing 28 additional beds and relieving the current shortage. It also enables transitional beds for the seismic strengthening work on the two existing towerblocks, the Percy Burnette and George Manson. The modular pre-fab construction enables much faster build times. HeathNZ intends using them again on other hospital projects when the Nelson redevelopment is completed.

The modules were built by Fitzgerald Construction in Nayland Road for the main contractor Southbase and are being transported late each night to the hospital by Cotton Heavy Haulage to minimise road disruption. Other local subbies include Southern Peaks Plumbing, Mckenzie Painting, Kina Consulting, Sellers Joinery and Corva Interiors.

The Demag AC 350 tonne mobile crane is from Christchurch company Smith Crane & Construction and each lift is 44 tonne. Lift team led by Steve McAdam and operator Tahi Davis and dogman Nick King-Turner.

Disclosure

Smith Cranes is owned by my youngest brother Tim. I have no financial interest in the company but was a director and engineer for the business from 2021/22 after retiring from Parliament. I resigned when elected Nelson’s Mayor in late 2022.

Smith Cranes was engaged for this work by the main contractor Southbase. I am a member of the Nelson Hospital Engagement Group for this Health NZ redevelopment project but this group has no role in procurement decisions.
