A Bronze at the 2026 Best Design Awards for Port Tarakohe.

Golden Bay has been a place of arrival and exchange since Māori settlement around 1300. The building’s etched plaster and curved screens reflect that history, from the Anaweka Waka to the pā palisades. The two-storey building is the operational centre of the wider port redevelopment, with offices for port staff and a public viewing platform for the community.

Cribs were Wānaka’s first holiday houses. This design takes its form from them.

At Youghal Street, fifteen townhouses now cluster around a regenerated waterway on one of old Wānaka’s last original properties. They step across the contours to address the water rather than the street.

Corrugated cladding, rustic board and batten, schist landscaping, native planting at the water’s edge. The crib gave the form. The waterway gave the plan.

The Port Tarakohe Management and Amenities Building has picked up a Bronze in the Private, Public and Institutional Spaces category at the 2026 Best Design Awards.

Our thanks to Tasman District Council and to Manawhenua Ki Mohua, representing Ngāti Tama, Ngāti Rārua and Te Ātiawa, for their collaboration and cultural guidance. Thanks also to artist Robin Slow, project managers BPM Ltd and Coman Construction.

Our newest addition to the Nelson studio is a Kia EV3. We design buildings to use less energy, so it makes sense for us to travel that way too. It will take our team to site visits and client meetings without burning fuel.

The brief was to transform an existing garage into a contemporary wellness retreat, a space distinctly separate from the main home where exercise, recovery and restoration could become part of a daily ritual.

Warm Western Red Cedar is paired with blackened metalwork and robust rubber flooring, while layered lighting shifts from bright, focused settings for strength training to softer, more ambient environments for recovery and reflection. Sliding glass doors provide a visual connection to the outdoors while maintaining a sense of enclosure and retreat.

Led by Interiors Lead and Associate Diana Shchukin, the project was developed through a highly collaborative design and build process involving three joiners, a metal fabricator and refinement sessions to resolve every detail. A disciplined 50mm modular system underpins the entire interior, resulting in a seamless, highly crafted space that balances performance, craftsmanship and wellbeing.

A huge thank you to our project partners and the wider team whose collaboration, knowledge and commitment helped bring the Port Tarakohe Management & Amenities Building in Tākaka to life.

We're honoured to share that the project has been named a Finalist in the Best Design Awards 2026 in the Private, Public and Institutional Spaces / Spatial category.

How do you build on the edge of a 22-metre cliff?

Difficult sites are where experience earns its keep. Knowing which questions to ask first, which specialists to bring in early, and where the real risk sits long before anyone draws a wall.

Cliff House sits 22 metres above the water on an Auckland coastal cliff, with a brief to match the site:

🏘 A home that could hold three generations at once.
3️⃣ Three levels.
🛏️ Five bedrooms.
✨ Generous open-plan living.
🎮 A media room.
🍸 Bar
💪 Gym and cellar.

Connected to the main residence is a fully self-contained one-bedroom suite for grandparents, with its own front door and its own quiet. Independence without distance.

The house turns decisively toward the ocean. Cantilevered living spaces reach out over the drop, glazing opens the seaward face completely, and the street elevation stays composed and largely solid. Private on arrival. Entirely open once you are inside.

Materials follow the setting. Natural sandstone for warmth and durability. Vertical timber weatherboards for softness and texture and detailing built for what a marine climate does to everything over time.

We spend most of our time designing for people. This project asked us to think differently.

We are delighted to see the Capuchin Monkey Exhibit area at now open to the public.

It was a privilege to contribute to this community-led project. The new habitat gives the zoo's six capuchins significantly more room to climb, explore and play, a big step up from their previous space. Designed with natural materials, climbing structures and open sightlines, it's a place that supports the monkeys' natural behaviours while giving visitors a genuine chance to observe and learn.

This project came together through local spirit, with contributions from over 20 businesses and generous donations from the public. It's a great reminder of what's possible when a community gets behind a shared cause.

If you haven't been down to see it yet, it's well worth a visit. Congratulations to everyone at Natureland Wildlife Trust and all involved in bringing this project to life.
