Solar farms look simple from the road. Stabilising one is a different game entirely.

Each area needs treating as soon as earthworks wrap up, and there's a lot more ground to cover than a typical site. Slow grass strike holds up every contractor who needs to follow you in, and that pushes out the whole project.

Every lot. Every berm.

From up here you can see how much ground a subdivision actually covers. On this Christchurch site, the crew hydromulched all of it with Stabi-Mulch, working straight off the road to reach into the lots.

It all went on together: a seed blend approved by Christchurch City Council, fertiliser to push the grass through, and Stabi-Mulch at 2.5 tonnes per hectare across the whole site.

Seed on the ground doesn't mean the site's stabilised. Most of the time, you need 80% grass strike before it's classified that way.

Until you get there, sign-off waits. And the longer it takes, the bigger the window for a weather event to cause erosion and send you back to redo the work at extra cost.

On big civil projects, exposed soil is a risk from day one.

Waiohiki Marae took the full force of Cyclone Gabrielle. This new stopbank was part of making sure the community is better protected next time the weather turns.

A stopbank only holds if the ground on it holds. Stabi-Mulch stabilises fresh earthworks on application, then the grass takes its time to come through and lock it in.

Stabi-Mulch went on and the bank was stabilised straight away.

Stopbanks get tested in the storm, and the grass on them has to hold when the water comes up.

The seed blend on this Hawke's Bay stopbank was chosen for that job, using our 3SRM process:

Discovery: getting to know the soil, slope, exposure and what the project needs.

Analysis: working out the erosion risks, what could slow establishment, and how the bank needs to perform long term.

Specification: settling on the seed blend, application method and revegetation approach for this site.

The blend came together like this:

Ryegrass strikes fast, giving early cover and roots while the bank is most exposed.

Plantain takes longer, then roots deeper and binds the soil as the cover matures.

Clover builds soil health, so the cover keeps improving season after season.

Every species has a role in keeping this asset protected.
