The cooler nights are slowing down, and if you're taking the opportunity to clean the fire while it's not needed daily, here are some tips.
Glass gone smoky? A damp cloth dipped in a bit of cool ash works surprisingly well, or use a proper fireplace glass cleaner. Skip the harsh chemicals as that can wear down the seal over time.
Ash piling up? Once the fire's completely cool, clear it out but leave a small layer (2 to 3cm) at the base. It actually helps insulate for your next burn.

When it comes to wood burners, take your time to source the right type of fuel. Using dry, seasoned hardwood like gum or manuka results in a hotter, longer burn with less smoke.
Using wet, green or treated timber burns dirty, clogs your flue and produces a lot of smoke, resulting in an inefficient fire that doesn't effectively heat your home.
