Winter is well and truly here so here are some of our winter garden tips to get you through this icy season:

Prune the right plants:
- Winter is a great time to prune roses, fruits trees (except some stone fruit in wet areas) hydrangeas and a large number of shrubs.
- Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches to improve airflow.

Improve your soil:
- Add compost, sheep pellets, or well - rotted manure to garden beds.
- Winter rain helps nutrients into the soil naturally.

Mulch everything:
- Apply 5-10cm of mulch around plants. This helps retain warmth, supress weeds, and protects roots from frost.
- Good options for this are bark mulch, pea straw, leaf litter or compost.

Plant winter veggies:
- You can still plant Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Silverbeet, Spinach, Garlic, Broad Beans, Onions & Shallots.

Protects against frost:
- Use frost cloth over tender plants.
- Move potted plants closer to the house or under cover.
-Water the soil before a frost. Moist soil holds more heat than dry soil.

Care for your lawn:
- Raise your mower height slightly.
- Avoid mowing when the lawn is wet.
- Aerate compacted areas if needed.

Plan for spring:
- Divide perennials.
- Order Seeds
- Design new garden beds and plan larger landscaping jobs before the spring rush.
