A lovely private back garden, newly fenced and ready for some thoughtful planning.

To me the first thing that needs addressing is the lack of outdoor entertainment area. With only a small parking area at the front, the large backyard really needs to be maximised. The client is unsure how long they will stay at the property so to me if they do only one thing, it should be to invest in an outdoor entertainment space.

The property needs an inviting area where the client or future client can picture themselves having bbqs in the summer, morning coffees in the sun or relaxing in the evenings with friends.

Outdoor entertaining spaces don’t need to be expensive they need a comfortable seating area, access from the house and a sense of privacy.

I believe it is one of the most worthwhile investments you can make in your garden.

Need a narrow upright tree for a small space?

Look for the words “fastigiate, upright or columnar” in the description. This means they grow vertically more than they grow horizontally. They are great for narrow garden beds, along fences and driveways.

I have always wanted an avenue but because it involved the only access way to the lawn I had to choose carefully. I went with Pyrus ‘Tawa Tower’ which is a great upright tree which only gets to approximately 2m wide.

There are many options these days, deciduous and evergreen and also upright fruit trees as well.

Some options include;

Pyrus fastigiata
Pyrus ‘Slim Jim’
Carpinus betulus ‘Fastigiata’
Prunus serrulate ‘Amanogawa’
Thuja occidentalis ‘Smaragd’
Ginko biloba ‘Fastigiata’

It’s that time of year when it can feel a bit overwhelming in the garden. I know I always feel this way and sometimes I don’t know where to start..

A lot of perennials need cutting back now and the garden starts to look a bit bare. However, all this maintenance is about preparing for spring and there is plenty of time. It’s a great time to make changes, to think about what hasn’t done well or what needs moving.

Another job on the list is mulching. It’s the perfect time to get mulch on those bare patches and around any trees or anything newly planted.

It is also the best time for planting, with warm soil and more regular moisture.

“Thanks for your ideas as they did shape the final outcome significantly”

A very happy client sent me these photos as I have been hounding him for updates.

It is not quite finished yet but you can see the transformation already.

The front of the section has had the raised planter box re-stained black and replanted and the side of the house has had a major tidy and a gravel path laid to make it more useable and appealing. Love this part of my job 🤩

After the excitement of a new home, my clients were slightly overwhelmed when it came to the landscaping.

That is where I came in to help them take the stress out of a blank canvas. Here is what we worked through.

Now is the perfect time to start dividing some of your perennials. Watch my wee demo of how to go about it. This is from a store bought plant but it works just the same as a plant growing in your garden.

Most perennials benefit from being divided every few years and you can often tell as they will produce fewer or smaller flowers than normal, the centre of the plant is dying leaving a bare spot or just generally looks unhealthy or it has become to big for the space.

Not only does it rejuvenate the plant but it also gives you free new plants to plant in your garden. By dividing and planting in other parts of your garden it creates repetition which helps with cohesiveness.

Plants that love to be divided include:
Flaxes, grasses, strappy leaf plants, catmint, irises, heuchera, sedum, bulbs, asters plus many more.. Why don’t you give it a go, I’m sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
