The opening of Te Atatū South’s Boardwalks is a major milestone, with more progress underway in New Lynn and Avondale. However, there’s still work to be done to finish Te Whau Pathway. Auckland Council is currently seeking public feedback on its Annual Plan, which will help decide future funding. If you want to see the pathway completed, now’s the time to have your say—submissions close Sunday 29 March.

Thomas Consultants Engineer Represents NZ at the IWA 2024 Water Loss Conference ✈️

We're thrilled to have our Principal Engineer, Richard Taylor representing New Zealand at the respected International Water Association 2024 Water Loss Conference in San Sebastián last week!

Richard's expertise is on full display – not only is he the sole engineer from New Zealand at this 600-strong conference, but he also presented on the latest updates to the Water New Zealand Water Loss Guideline (which he himself led the development of).

The conference was packed with valuable insights and one workshop Richard found particularly interesting was "Utilising Smart Meter Data'. With several New Zealand water suppliers implementing smart meters, this workshop on how to leverage data from these meters is highly relevant to the work we do for our clients.

Safe flight home Richard! 🛫🇳🇿

💦 National Wetland Restoration Conference 💦

Thomas Consultant Ecologists, Lizette Venter and Melanie Dixon attended last week's Wetland Symposium beside 230 other scientists, community groups, landowners, iwi, wetland managers and students.

Lizette was invited to present at the conference with her research on water flow dynamics for rehabilitation efforts in South Africa, drawing parallels with our own country.

Over the 3-day event attendees learnt about current and planned wetland research including rare species, significant sites, and mapping. Workshops were presented where they studied wetland soils and pasture methods. Plus, a field day trip included visits to various Northland wetland sites to learn about their history and significance.

A big shoutout to the National Wetland Trust of New Zealand organising this event and uniting professionals who share a passion for the well-being of our wetlands.

Subdivision can appear daunting at first glance.

We get it. The many moving parts, processes to follow, and changes to regulations.

Our team has crafted an updated subdivision document to serve as a straightforward and useful guide to take some of that confusion away. As well as timeline, costs, and steps to consider, it outlines the Auckland Unitary Plan and how it has changed subdivision rules over the years.

A study from University of Auckland - Waipapa Taumata Rau which came out this week indicates around 22,000 new homes consented from 2016 - 2021 can be directly attributed to Auckland's Unitary Plan.

This plan has been instrumental in shaping the future of Auckland and provides housing options for our growing population. A study showed that before the Unitary Plan (1996-2016), there was an average of 5.9 building consents issued per 1,000 residents. This number significantly increased to 9.5 consents per 1,000 residents after the plan came into effect (2017-2023).

Auckland Council chief economist, Gary Blick, saw a slower growth path for Auckland rental and housing prices when compared to other parts of the country. However, Blick says this doesn't necessarily mean Auckland is affordable.
