Sometimes the cheapest quote isn't the best job.

We recently quoted a central heating project where access to the property was particularly challenging.

Our quote took that into account, including the logistics and labour required to safely get the equipment into position and complete the installation.

We didn't win the job on price.

The homeowner accepted a cheaper quote from another company, signed the contract and paid their deposit.

Installation day arrived. The installation team arrived at the property, saw the access and the stairs... and left.

The homeowner later received an email advising that the company could no longer complete the installation, and their deposit was refunded.

They're now back at square one.

It's a good reminder that when comparing heating quotes, the bottom-line price doesn't always tell the whole story.

A thorough site visit matters. Access matters. Planning matters. And understanding exactly what's involved in completing the installation matters, especially when the materials weigh over 150kgs a piece.

At Pipeline, when we quote a project, we're not just pricing the equipment. We're considering how the job will actually be completed safely and successfully before we ask you to commit.

Sometimes that makes us a little more expensive.

But we'd rather identify the difficult bits before installation day, not when the van is already sitting in your driveway.

Fast forward to today, the system has now been successfully installed by Pipeline and the homeowners are absolutely thrilled with the result.

📈 What happens when your gas price jumps more than 43%?

That's exactly what happened to the homeowners in our latest gas-to-heat-pump conversion case study.

Their gas energy rate increased from 9.62c/kWh to 13.8c/kWh, while their daily line charge also increased.

Based on their previous gas usage, that meant they were facing an estimated $1,847.23 increase in their gas bill for 2026 alone.

They decided it was time for a change.

Pipeline replaced their gas boiler with a high-efficiency Stiebel Eltron air-to-water heat pump while retaining and integrating their existing hydronic heating system.

They also added solar PV, creating a modern heating system designed around electrification and renewable energy.

📊 Gas boiler vs air-to-water heat pump: a real Pipeline project

We recently converted a 230m² Upper Hutt home from a Baxi gas boiler to a Stiebel Eltron air-to-water heat pump.

The home already had:

✓ 12 radiators
✓ 2 heated towel rails
✓ Hydronic underfloor heating
✓ A 300L hot water system

Rather than abandoning the existing hydronic system, we designed the new heat pump solution around it.

The existing radiator and Variocomp underfloor systems were retained and integrated into the new system, allowing the homeowners to move away from gas while keeping the comfort of hydronic heating.

This wasn't a theoretical exercise. It's a real Wellington home and a real Pipeline conversion.
