➡️ Before and After!…A dangerous HWC vs a safe new one ❤️
We were recently called out to a we***ck hot water cylinder because the homeowners had noticed their hot water pressure was getting weaker.
After investigating, we found the culprit.. a galvanised tee had been installed between brass fittings.
❌ Why is this a problem? When galvanised steel and brass are connected together, they react with each other over time. This causes the galvanised fitting to corrode from the inside out. Often, you can't see the damage from the outside, but internally the pipe can become almost completely blocked, reducing your water pressure.
Even more importantly, because this was a we***ck hot water system (an uncontrolled heat source), the vent pipe must remain completely open. If corrosion blocks that vent, it's like putting a cap on the cylinder's safety vent. In the worst-case scenario, pressure can build up and cause the cylinder to split or even fail catastrophically.
Our recommendation was to replace all of the corroded galvanised pipework back to the cylinder outlet. Unfortunately, the old galvanised fittings had seized so badly that they couldn't be removed safely, meaning the hot water cylinder also needed replacing.
