Wetlands are increasingly appreciated for their role in flood prevention and as carbon sinks. But they also act as a crucial food source for the wider catchment.

A week ago we had a wonderful get together to celebrate Winter, Community and the Oparara reserve. We planted 282 trees and flaxes around the toilet area then shared some kai and memories of fun times had at the reserve as the younger generation of kids had a ball climbing trees and dancing as the sun set. The local band played some groovy tunes as people gathered around the roaring bonfire 🔥It was great to enjoy music and friends again in this magic space. Thank you to all who turned up, set up, hung out, packed down. It was well worth the effort!! If you haven't been to the Oparara reserve in a while, get down there and have a wander around! It's forever changing.

Check us out!!! Reaching out all the way to Connecticut!!! A group of 15 students from Connecticut in the US visited our little ol' Karamea nursery! 🤗 this wonderful group of young people have had 3 weeks in Aotearoa looking at waterway health and enjoying some of our natural treasure. We often forget how lucky we are until someone else tells us 🙄🤗
They even got their hands dirty and mucked in, we'll get to plant out some connecticut infused seedlings soon 😁 thank you so much It

What a great night, with really interesting and passionate speakers talking about some of the mahi that is already happening to protect and enhance our beautiful and ecologically important backyard here in the Buller - and also amazing ideas for the future. I spoke about our organisation and how we can support environmental restoration projects Buller-wide. Important connections were made and a conversation over a cuppa has cemented an idea that has been rattling around in my head - a new and exciting prospect for a very significant environmental project for Karamea. Watch this space!

A huge thank you to Ministry for Primary Industries Te Uru Rākau for bringing the Growing Native Forests workshop to Westport, and to everyone from the local community who came along and supported it.
There was an incredible amount of knowledge shared throughout the evening, from growing native forests and understanding our unique ecosystems, to enhancing biodiversity on productive land, controlling feral animals, and protecting great spotted kiwi habitat.
Events like these remind us just how much knowledge, experience, and passion exists within our community.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the discussions and helped make the evening such a success.

Thank you to Ministry for Primary Industries te Uru Rakau for an informative presentation, Wanganui Hotel for delicious catering and our locals who came along to the Growing Native Forests workshop Wednesday evening 🙌 it was a great opportunity to share ideas around the use of native plants as a solution to current environmental factors that we all face in these times, erosion, flooding, limited habitat, shelter and beautification being a few. These kinds of discussions always open a wider train of thought. I'm grateful 🙏
