One of the end users of our beams gave us a call today.

Not to ask a question.
Not to raise an issue.

Just to say thank you.

He said:

"Please pass this on to the team. The beams are amazing!! Turned out way better than I was expecting. I almost feel like it's a shame I've got to paint them because they look so good."

Calls like that mean a lot.

The team put a huge amount of effort into every beam that leaves the workshop, and hearing feedback like this makes it all worthwhile.

We're incredibly proud of the standards our crew set for themselves and the quality of work they continue to produce day in and day out.

Thank you for taking the time to call. It absolutely made our day.

Go Northlam 🙌

That's a wrap for Saturday 👌

A good day on the box for the three of us.

Pretty happy with where we ended up by the end of it.

Big thanks to Lianne for keeping us fuelled with smoko this morning.

Now it's time to put the tools down and enjoy the evening.

We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Well team, another weekend mission underway.

Today we've got Rob, Andrew, and myself back on the shavings box project.

Rob's on the tin cladding, getting the sides lined, while Andrew's tackling the door system.

There'll be a fair bit of cutting, grinding, welding, and problem-solving before the day's out.

Hopefully we can get a good push on today and make tomorrow a little more cruisy.

We'll see how we get on 😅

Exciting times in the Kiwi Carpentry door department.

We've just added a mortise lock machine to the workshop and Bobby and the team are pretty stoked about it.

For those wondering, a mortise lock is the type of lock that sits inside the edge of a door. They're commonly used in commercial buildings, apartments, schools, and higher-spec residential projects.

Up until now, we'd been machining these by hand. It worked, but it took time and required a lot of care to get everything spot on.

This new machine allows us to cut the mortise accurately and consistently, making the process faster, tidier, and more precise.

Andrew and Adrian put it through its paces today and gave it the thumbs up 👍

With a number of commercial projects coming up, this will make a big difference to the team and the quality of the finished product.

Always good to keep investing in better tools and better ways of doing things.

PlaceMakers Far North We know one of your reps called up a few months back asking if we had one of these... now we do 🙌

Before we started lining the shavings box over the weekend, it was time to see if the tipper trailer could actually handle it.

According to Andrew, it was only supposed to take about 30 seconds to tip up 😅

Turns out the trailer battery was nearly flat, so it took more like 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

Safe to say we'll be making sure the battery is charged before we go to empty a load of shavings.

That said, it's looking pretty good.

Also, if you look closely, you'll spot Ash helping with the testing. The cat's taken a keen interest in the project and seems to think every new structure around here is built specifically for him.

One of the simplest workshop hacks we've come across.

If you've ever used a nibbler, you'll know it leaves thousands of tiny razor-sharp bits of steel everywhere.

Andrew's solution?

A plastic bottle screwed onto the bottom to catch them as you cut.

Less mess, less cleanup, and a lot less chance of finding one in your boot, tyre, or the dog's paw later.

Simple. Cheap. Effective.

Step 4: Prep & Paint

Well... we didn't quite make the 4pm finish time 😅

Missed it by about three hours.

But we did get a fair bit knocked over.

Andrew finished welding up the angle brackets, then it was my turn. Wire brushing the welds, cleaning everything down with solvent, and getting it ready for paint.

Once that was done, all the welds got coated with a zinc-rich paint to help protect against rust and give it the best chance of standing the test of time.

It's one of those jobs where every step takes longer than you think, but we're happy with the progress.

We might not have got the afternoon off we were hoping for... but maybe tomorrow.

On the bright side, we did kick the day off with a sauna and breakfast at Ahipara with the crew from The Sauna Project, so we are happy 👌

You might be wondering what’s got Andrew tearing his hair out 😅

While everyone sees the beams, doors, stairs, and workshop chaos… there’s been some seriously big days and nights happening in the office lately too.

Quotes, schedules, problem solving, planning, supplier calls, paperwork, pricing, emails, and trying to keep everything moving.

So shout out to Andrew, Krista, and Rob for the mahi going on behind the scenes to keep the wheels turning.

The workshop might be loud… but the office has been going just as hard lately.

Celebrating a bloody hardworking team this week.

The work has been coming through the doors thick and fast, and heading back out just as quickly because of the crew in the workshop and on site.

Everyone’s been going hard.

You take a step back, look around, and see all your workmates putting in the same effort beside you. That’s a pretty good feeling.

We celebrated with a Barbie yesterday and took a moment to appreciate the push.

Big thank you to our customers for the work you’re putting through us. We really do appreciate it.

It wasn’t that long ago we were scratching around like chickens trying to find work.

Proud of the team. Grateful for the work.

Hope everyone has a safe long weekend out there.

Now that I’ve finally remembered David’s name… 😅

Had a really good yarn with him when he stopped in the other day.

He mentioned he’s been following our Facebook posts for the last six months or so and said he’s learned a lot more about what we actually do as a business.

For him, doors were probably the main area he associated us with, but through the posts he’s since realised how much else goes on here too. Glulam, stairs, shelving, building, and everything in between.

To be honest, that’s kind of the whole reason we started doing these posts in the first place.

Just trying to help people understand what we do, get it out into the community, and teach a few things along the way too.

So hopefully other reps, customers, and followers are finding the content useful as well.

And if there’s ever anything you’d like to see more of or learn about, let us know 👌

Also… still working on un-training my brain from calling him Alan.
